Privacy NoticeWhen Meghan Markle became a part of the Royal Family, she had to adapt to a new set of rules, one of which was reportedly considered crucial by the late Queen Mother. So much so that breaking it would have her ‘turning in her grave’. The Duchess of Sussex, who was previously known for her role in the TV series Suits, found herself having to adhere to a formal set of rules that she would have never thought about during her acting career. During a visit to a children’s hospital in Los Angeles in March, royal enthusiasts noticed Meghan doing something that would have been seen as inappropriate if she were still a working royal.

Meghan took pictures with the children and then decided to sign them with her autograph. Generally, the Royal Family declines any requests for autographs. Some sources suggest this is to prevent their signatures from being used fraudulently, but the actual reason why the royals avoid this has never been officially confirmed, reports the Express. Since Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, Meghan no longer has to abide by the same royal rules when they are out meeting the public and promoting charitable causes. Many members of the Firm, including the late Queen Mother who passed away in 2002, adhered strictly to the monarchy’s formal rules. This led a columnist for the New York Post to suggest that the sight of Meghan signing autographs would have made the Queen Mother roll “over in her grave”. During her charming visit to the Chelsea Flower Show’s children’s picnic in 2023, Kate Middleton was put on the spot by a young pupil who asked for her signature. Adhering to royal rules, she gracefully responded, “I can’t write my name, but I can draw.”

When pressed again for an autograph, the Princess of Wales kindly explained, “My name’s Catherine. I’m not allowed to write my signature, it’s just one of those rules.” Royal experts have often drawn parallels between Meghan’s approach within The Firm and that of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Speaking on This Morning, Royal correspondent Camilla Tominey highlighted how Meghan has shaken things up with her modern touch and said: “Meghan broke all the rules with selfies, high fives and hugs.” She elaborated: “You wouldn’t have seen it back in the 40s and 50s but Princess Diana started these sorts of trends…Sometimes I think the public think the royals are stuffier than they are.” Indeed, Meghan showed her warmth and approachability when she didn’t shy away from holding hands with well-wishers or even receiving a kiss on the hand during a visit to Cardiff in 2018.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
