Privacy NoticeWhen Prince Harry and Meghan Markle waved goodbye to the UK – and their roles as senior working royals – it seemed to be them against the world. But four years down the line, a source tells OK! that the damaged relationship with Harry’s brother, Prince William, and the fallout from various explosive interviews and books, have created a divide between the couple. One of the biggest bones of contention is allegedly that Harry now lives 5,523 miles away from his London-based family, so the opportunities to repair things, particularly with William and Kate Middleton are few and far between. “Harry has been really torn about coming back to the UK as he knows Meghan won’t join him for a variety of reasons but he feels that this is something he has to do,” our source claimed.

“He feels quite isolated in America at times and although he loves being over there and wouldn’t want to raise his children anywhere else, he is homesick. He misses big parts of his old life and it’s not just his family, but his friends and just being in England.” While Harry, who turns 40 next week, is said to be hankering for aspects of his old life in the UK, he’s also made it very clear that he fears for Meghan’s safety over here, and also for the safety of his children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two. He described the UK as “dangerous” during a recent televised interview. Leaving no room for interpretation, he added: “ It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.” Our source says Harry’s safety fears, coupled with Meghan’s busy work schedule, have left the couple at times living separate lives, even though their marriage remains strong. “As he turns 40, he’s doing a lot of reflecting and he knows his dad is getting older and with Kate having cancer, it has scared him,” they claimed. “ He doesn’t want to be estranged from them and the only way he can improve relations is to spend more time in the UK.”

They continued: “But that will mean more time away from Meghan as they’ve both made it clear she won’t come over. Not only is she busy with her own work projects, she doesn’t feel it would be right to join him but she is supportive of his decision to try and make it up with his family. “At times it feels like they’re living separate lives as they both have so much going on and they can’t be together as much as they want, but they know they can survive this time apart as they have a strong marriage.” This year, Harry has made a number of trips back to the UK by himself, including a flying visit in February to see his dad, King Charles, following the monarch’s announcement that he had cancer, and the recent trip for the funeral of his uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, who was married to Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Jane. While things with Charles, 75, appear to be looking brighter, it’s a different story with the warring brothers. William was also at the funeral in Norfolk in August, but the pair reportedly kept their distance from each other.

Meanwhile, Meghan hasn’t spent more than a day in the UK since the late Queen’s funeral in September 2022. She did make a surprise trip here in May however, reuniting with Harry after the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary celebrations before heading off to Nigeria. The Duchess had initially been part of the planned London trip but her visit was cancelled after details of their diary were leaked, meaning Harry arrived solo. Our source claims Meghan is by no means oblivious to Harry’s pain – or the effects the apparent estrangement may be having on their children. “Meghan obviously wishes things were different and that she could come over, and she hates the thought of them spending so much time apart but there’s no way right now,” they said. “Maybe down the line she can come over with the children but first they need to see how things work out with Harry. “She just wants him to be happy and it does pain her that her children don’t know their English relatives and she would like that to change. But both her and Harry need to trust the royals again and it will take time, but this is Harry’s olive branch and she’s happy Harry is going home’ ”
Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard isn’t available to the public yet
While Harry’s future as a royal and in the relationships with his family remain uncertain, the Sussexes are also trying to juggle their various businesses and charity ventures. While Harry’s future as a royal and in the relationships with his family remain uncertain, the Sussexes are also trying to juggle their various businesses and charity ventures. With the summer almost over, Meghan is understood to now be pressing ahead with her America Riviera Orchard lifestyle brand, despite last month when the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a “non-final Office action”, giving the business three months to amend and add certain details relating to certain products. Meghan is believed to be very much committed to the project so, for now at least, she has plenty to keep her busy across the pond.
