Privacy NoticeMartin Freeman has opened up about his true feelings towards ex-partner Amanda Abbington. The couple were together for 16 years and welcomed two children. Amanda, 50, is currently in the spotlight due to an ongoing BBC investigation into Strictly Come Dancing after she made allegations of bullying and misconduct during rehearsals. She also labelled her professional partner Giovanni Pernice’s behaviour in the studio as “abusive, cruel and mean”. Giovanni has vehemently denied all the accusations against him and has encouraged the public to ‘ignore’ Amanda’s claims. A close friend of the Italian star added that his legal team have found evidence that will conclusively “clear his name”, and demonstrate that Amanda’s allegations are not entirely accurate.

Since the Sherlock actress’ allegations surfaced, Amanda has been swamped with hateful comments and abuse from online trolls. She has also received threats to her and her family’s lives, and has described the onslaught of hatred as “brutal and unforgiving”. The star has experienced difficult times in her life where her mental health has suffered. One such period was the painful breakup she endured with her former long-term partner Martin Freeman – which deeply affected her and left her contemplating suicide, reports the Daily Star. Amanda and Martin were together for 16 years before they decided to part ways. Martin, famed for his roles in hits like Sherlock and The Hobbit, stayed quiet about the split initially but eventually shared, “I’ll always love Amanda”. The pair first crossed paths on the set of Men Only back in 2000, sparking a romance that led to them welcoming two children, Joe, 18, and Grace, 16, into their lives. But as Martin’s star rose, particularly with his success stateside, it began to strain their relationship, ultimately leading to their separation.

Despite the heartache, both Amanda and Martin have made it clear there’s no bad blood between them. In a candid chat with the Financial Times last year, Martin opened up: “I’m not with Amanda anymore. It’s very, very amicable – I’ll always love Amanda.” At the time of the interview, whispers were that Martin had found love again with French actress Rachel Mariam, though nothing was official. Meanwhile, Amanda had moved on too, finding love with stuntman Jonathan Goodwin after a Twitter meet-cute. Since then, Jonathan and Amanda’s love has blossomed even further, with Amanda going on to provide vital support for her partner after he was rendered paraplegic due to a stunt gone wrong. This, however, has not stopped the pair from moving on in their relationship and the pair have been happily engaged to this day.
