The 12th season of the hit reality series returned to E4 on Monday (March 3) night, with a fresh group of singletons entering the famous matchmaking experiment in the hope of finding their soulmate. Viewers were particularly shocked to learn that the first couple, Paul and Carina, had already been on a date eight months before. Things got even more awkward when it was revealed that Paul had ghosted Carina, but the pair seem to have put the past behind them. During Thursday’s (March 6) episode, we were introduced to 34-year-old account manager Rhi and her groom-to-be Jeff, a 39-year-old electrician from Victoria. Things were looking promising as the pair’s values seemed to align perfectly, with expert John Aiken confessing that they would be one of “the strongest couples” this year.

Married at First Sight Australia fans were left speechless after a couple were reunited at the altar

However, when it came to their wedding day, the guests were left speechless as Jeff turned around and awkwardly said: “Oh my god. Hey, Rhi.” Turns out the pair weren’t getting “married at first sight”. They previously met in Melbourne through mutual gym friends and dated for about a month. However, as they both had come out of long-term relationships shortly before meeting, they amicably decided that they were better off being single. “Is this actually happening right now? Yeah, I know my husband well. We dated last year. It kind of just fizzled, we both went our separate ways but we remain friends. We ran a half marathon together, we’ve had coffee and stuff since then, so yeah, it ended very amicably,” Rhi explained. “I guess we friend-zoned each other, it’s a bit bizarre,” Jeff added. Despite their initial shock at being matched with one another, both Rhi and Jeff seemed hopeful that the experiment could rekindle a romance between them.

The twelfth season of Married at First Sight Australia is currently airing on E4

However, MAFS viewers were left frustrated with the pairing, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their disapproval. “Is the Australian dating pool THAT small?! 2 couples already knew each other,” one person wrote, while another added: “What are the chances they know each other AGAIN!” “So that’s two brides and grooms that knew each other already! You’d expect that in a small country like Cymru, but Australia’s about the size of the whole of Europe!” a third fan said, with another sharing: “Another couple that already know each other.” Meanwhile, other viewers were impressed with the drama that’s already played out on-screen, with one saying: “This is the messiest season. They must of hired private investigators.” “Ohhh Jeff and Rhi! This is interesting!” another said, with a third sharing: “Interesting. I like this genre of #MAFSAU ex flings marrying each other could be interesting lol.” Married at First Sight Australia airs Monday to Thursday on E4 at 9pm
