Privacy NoticeA BBC newsreader was left red-faced after a technical mishap live on air caught her chatting and checking her phone during what she presumed was an ad break. Oblivious to being live, Annita McVeigh thought it wasn’t showtime during the midday news segment on Monday, September 9. The odd moment had no audio for the majority of its one-minute duration. The Northern Irish presenter talks to people off-camera and scrolls through her phone, all while live on air. Sound then returns with McVeigh saying ‘so, I think it’s the same as last time’, before the start of the BBC news music. McVeigh then starts reading the news headlines. The clip caused confusion online, with people taking to social media to ask what was going on. TV reviewer and broadcaster Scott Bryan tweeted his reaction: “The moment Annita started checking her phone was when I started panicking.” Following a one-year hiatus triggered by internal shuffling at the BBC, McVeigh toasted her return to the screen this March. She posted a cheery photo from within the studio, captioning the image: “….and I’m back. In Studio C with #NewsNow until 1500GMT – so good to be bringing you the news again.” One fan beamed, tweeting their joy: “So pleased to see you back @AnnitaBBC, I have really missed you. At long last an experienced newsreader.” Another chimed in with praise: “Congratulations on your return to BBC News. It was a travesty that you had to reapply for your position.” Echoing similar sentiments, another follower said: “Wonderful news Annita. Welcome back.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK! MagazineFacebookTwitter
