And I am here for it. Growing up, I often observed the women around me getting lost in the whirlwind of marriage and motherhood, leaving little room for friendships to thrive, let alone exotic getaways. And I always remember feeling sad about that, especially as I began to realise the profound significance of nurturing these bonds. And so making time for my friends has always been an important choice for me – even with all the looming societal responsibilities that come with being a 35 year old woman. And I’m lucky enough that my friends feel the same way. So when the opportunity to fly to Jamaica with my best friend came up, I jumped at the chance – determined to redefine the Caribbean experience, once solely reserved for lovey-dovey couples or well-heeled families. And redefine it, we did.
Me (left) and Lucy were so excited about doing a long-haul trip together!
Jamaica welcomed us with open arms, offering a medley of experiences. From leisurely beach days to adrenaline-pumping excursions, the island catered to every whim and fancy of our eclectic desires. One moment, we found ourselves scaling waterfalls in waterlogged shoes, the next, lounging seaside with rum punch in hand and novels at the ready. Our adventure kicked off at the swanky S Hotel in Montego Bay, a haven of luxury that’s been crowned the Caribbean and Central America’s top spot by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. Enveloped by its private beach and sprawling pool oasis, we indulged in a morning of sheer bliss, with attentive staff catering to our every whim – most importantly, my first Red Stripe of the trip.
We plonked ourselves down on the beach and got to know the local beverages, naturally
We spent all morning dipping in and out of the ocean and napping on the sun loungers in what one might call The Perfect Morning. Come afternoon, energised after a few power naps, we set sail on a catamaran tour—an absolute Caribbean must-do. With Dreamer Catamaran Tours, we danced into the sunset, snorkelled in crystal-clear waters, and sipped on some delicious rum punch. An absolute must – especially if you’re travelling with a friend. The next day, undeterred by our rum hangover, we ventured into town for a dance class — a brilliantly fun afternoon that saw us stumbling through choreography with all the finesse of a tipsy wedding guest. We learnt about the culture of dance in Jamaica whilst attempting to copy the sultry moves of our incredible instructor – without much luck. If you want to see how you compare, book with First Dance Studio here.
We had so much fun trying to learn the traditional Jamaican and African dances
We enjoyed a serene afternoon making jewellery at A Mi Mek It
Continuing our creative theme, we later headed to a jewellery making workshop at A Mi Mek It. Eager to channel our inner artisans, we delved into crafting trinkets amidst the lush surroundings of the owner’s tranquil garden. She even made us homemade Sorell as we spent the afternoon chatting away—a perfect blend of creativity and camaraderie. But our thirst for adventure beckoned, leading us to the iconic Dunn’s River Falls – Jamaica’s number one attraction. After purchasing some rather fetching water shoes (a must!) we proceeded to climb 600 feet over a series of stone steps as cold, clear mountain water gushes down on top of us. And while this sounds absolutely terrifying, it really was very doable – in fact there were a number of older people and children in our group. Plus the guides are so brilliant at keeping you safe and, more importantly, holding your phone for you and taking those all important action shots! This is a must-do activity in Jamaica, in my opinion. Book yours here
Here’s us enjoying the River Dunn’s Falls
The view from our bamboo raft as we enjoyed a romantic day
A bamboo raft ride down the Dunn River offered a serene contrast, punctuated by Prosecco and limestone foot massages. Led by a local, we were taken down the scenic river as he regaled stories of his life as we sat back and took in the surroundings —a testament to the island’s seamless fusion of adventure and luxury. Other standout activities I would recommend would be a visit to the Rastafarian Indigenous Village and the Sun Valley Plantation – both brilliantly educational and authentic. The Rastafarian village is open to the public and offers an authentic glimpse into the Rastafarian way of life — it was a poignant encounter with Jamaican culture and spirituality. Engaging with village elders and immersing ourselves in their way of life, we left enriched and enlightened, with newfound appreciation for the island’s heritage. If you’re the spiritual kind, the village also offers retreats, which sound incredible.
We enjoyed an educational experience at the Rastafarian Indigenous Village
Similarly, our visit to Sun Valley Plantation provided insight into Jamaica’s botanical wonders, with a passionate guide regaling us with tales of flora and fauna. It was truly an unforgettable experience – particularly the lunch our tour guide made us with fruits and vegetables straight from the plantation. And let’s not forget the culinary odyssey that defined our journey—Jamaica’s vibrant cuisine, teeming with fresh produce and tantalising flavors. From seafood extravaganzas at Pier 1 to vegan delights at EITS Cafe, every meal was a celebration of island ingenuity and gastronomic prowess.
We had so much good food during our trip
In the latter half of our adventure, we sought refuge at the opulent Moon Palace Hotel, where culinary decadence met unparalleled luxury—a fitting finale to our Jamaican escapade. You can choose between luxury a la carte restaurants, like Momo and Gondola, and their standard walk-in restaurants like Pier 8 (who do a fantastic breakfast!) They even have 24 hour snack spots where you can get a panini, pizzas and sushi. So, to all the ladies out there, heed my call—grab your bestie, pack your bags, and embark on the ultimate Jamaican sojourn. For in the heart of the Caribbean, amidst turquoise waters and golden sands, awaits a paradise not just for lovers, but for girl friends ready for adventure.

Flights I flew with TUI from London Gatwick. I flew premium economy and could not have asked for a more comfortable long-haul flight. I was able to skip the long queues and had so much leg room, I didn’t know what to do with it! The in-flight meals were delicious and the film selection was great.
