With the rapid increase of household bills, coupled with the cost-of-living crisis, budgeting for the big day can be an emotional rollercoaster for many couples. In a recent survey, Hitched revealed that the average wedding costs £17,300 – but you don’t have to spend this much to have your dream day. When planning the special occasion, it is important to set a wedding budget and allocate your funds wisely, while avoiding splashing out unnecessarily. Tosh, who runs Tosh Events, revealed the top three things couples waste money on when it comes to the big day. Wedding cake The cake cutting tradition is one of those photo opportunities that graces every wedding album – but don’t fork out on a fancy wedding cake, warns Tosh. The expert explains couples often waste money on elaborate cake designs that no one pays much attention to. She said: “You can get a smaller sized cake or have your baker mix dummy cake with your real cake. “That’s if you really love the over the top cake design. “There will be other desserts/treats anyway, divert the rest of the money on something else.” Whimsical Wonderful Weddings revealed the average cake set couples back £350 last year, which could be spent on something you’ll enjoy more. Programmes Although gifting your guests individual wedding programmes seems a lovely gesture, they are an unnecessary expense, claims Tosh. She added: “They are really pretty and give that personal touch but ends up in the trash. “Your friends just want to have fun and socialise, your parents and siblings will probably keep their copies and that’s about it. “Just print a few copies and put the money on something else.” If you have your heart set on the idea, you could save money by printing just one and placing it near the entrance for everyone to see, or write the order of the day on a chalkboard. More than one dress Tosh recommends wearing the same dress for both the ceremony and reception. Wedding dresses are a huge expense, so picking one you adore for both occasions will help save loads of money. It can also be a nuisance finding somewhere to store all the tulle after the big day. The wedding expert said: “I get calls after my couples wedding asking what they can do with their wedding dress. “‘Tosh, I don’t know how to even keep the dress, It’s just all over the place. “If you fall in this category, you can rent a gorgeous wedding dress instead and save your money.”
