Luxuriating in an indoor infinity pool soaking up breathtaking parkland views, perhaps, enjoying dinner in a grand dining room as deer graze nearby, or maybe sampling an aromatherapy shower and crystal steam room? It’s all on offer at this 43-room hotel set in 2,000 acres of gorgeous grounds and a short stroll from Bowood House, the Georgian home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne.

Although a modern building, the hotel is decorated in English country-house style, with impressive replaces, book-lined walls and seating nooks.

The spa offers elegant treatment rooms designed by Lady Lansdowne. We chose a Work It Out detoxing massage designed to stimulate circulation to improve lymph drainage – and asked for a firm pressure to unknot aching muscles. The juniper, lavender and cypress essential oils left our skin feeling incredibly soft, while a post-massage herbal tea in the relaxation room ensured the Zen mood stayed with us all day.

The Grove, Chandler’s Cross, Hertfordshire Set in 300 acres of rural Hertfordshire, this former home of the Earls of Clarendon is now a five-star playground for the rich and famous, such as Kylie Minogue and Robert Pattinson. The decor – country house infused with boutique design – evokes a luxury aesthetic, with each lounge having its own colour scheme and character.

Afternoon tea is quintessentially British, with nger sandwiches and scones, while the homemade lemon curd is lip-smackingly good. Dine on homegrown produce at The Stables and The Glasshouse, sushi in the lounges and Italian treats in the Verde Kitchen or try the poke bowls in the Sequoia Kitchen.

Leave your stresses behind at the award- winning Sequoia Spa, with its black mosaic-tiled, ozone-filtered pool. We recommend the Natura Bissé treatments, especially the bamboo massage designed to slow busy minds, and the Diamond Experience Infusion of Life Facial, which is said to give a youthful, healthy glow. A tranquillity room and outdoor pool add to the blissful vibe. Prices start at £445 per room per night. Book here. The real show-stopping rooms are the secluded Orchard Cabins. Designed for wellness with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the apple orchard, each offers a relaxing retreat where guests can immerse themselves in nature. The super-luxe cast iron bathtubs on the outdoor terraces are a favourite with the guests, placed as they are to take in the scenery or, better still, for watching the night skies.

After a soak, head to the Secret Garden Spa with its 12-metre swimming pool, huge outdoor hot tub, various steam rooms and saunas – the shower room’s rainforest-style storm effects are out of this world – and menu of holistic treatments.
