Sea moss obsession explained as users claim it makes them ‘glow from inside out’ (Image: Getty)You might be a bit sceptical about skincare and health trends that originate from TikTok, but occasionally, a fad does emerge that ends up benefiting thousands of people who might have otherwise remained unaware of a specific product or health tip. Take sea moss for example. This trending algae is all over the video app right now, with 230k clips under the hashtag #seamoss. It’s also been endorsed by celebs like Bella Hadid and Kim Kardashian, who credit it as their ‘secret’ weapon for radiant skin and increased energy. In fact, Bella is such a fan of the ingredient that she recently revealed she drinks a glass of it every morning. If you’ve never heard of sea moss before, don’t worry, you’re not alone. The trend seems to have appeared out of nowhere. However, the ingredient itself isn’t new at all. Vegans may be familiar with it due to its egg-like thickening properties. Going back even further, it was reportedly a staple food for Ireland’s working class during the mid-1800s potato famine and was later introduced by Irish immigrants to other countries like Jamaica, where it became a fairly common addition to foods like ice cream and soups, reports the Mirror. What are the benefits of sea moss? Dr Kajal Babamiri, a GP specialist in dermatology at CLNQ Clinic, has been singing the praises of sea moss, revealing: “Nutritionally, sea moss is quite impressive. It contains 92 of the 102 minerals that the human body needs, including iodine, calcium, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It’s also rich in vitamins A, E, F, and K, alongside omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and amino acids. These nutrients contribute to its reputation for promoting overall health. “. She adds: “It’s also thought to improve thyroid function due to its iodine content, enhance digestive health through its prebiotic fibres and boost immunity with its high antioxidant levels. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties can aid in reducing inflammation and potentially alleviating conditions like arthritis.”

But does it really make you ‘glow from the inside out’? Dr Babamiri points out: “These kinds of claims are mostly being made by social media influencers,” but she notes that “This idea is rooted in its nutritional profile, which supports skin health. The vitamins and minerals found in sea moss can contribute to collagen production, potentially improving skin elasticity and hydration. Antioxidants combat free radicals, reducing signs of ageing and promoting a clearer complexion. Therefore, regular consumption of sea moss might result in healthier, more radiant skin, lending some credence to the glowing testimonials seen online.” So, should we all be adding sea moss to our diets? Yes, for those keen to up their wellness game, but keep your expectations in check. “While there are genuine health benefits associated with its nutrients, the notion that it is a miracle cure or an essential supplement for everyone is an exaggeration. Like any supplement, sea moss should be consumed in moderation. Overconsumption, particularly of iodine, can lead to thyroid issues. It is always best to consult with a healthcare provider before adding a new supplement to your diet, especially if you have existing health conditions or are on medication,” advises Dr Babamiri. How do I take sea moss? You’ll find sea moss available in various forms including gel, capsules, and even gummies. Many fans blend it into their smoothies just like protein powder, while others pop it as a pill. Then there’s the ‘influencer’ way of scooping it straight from the jar with a tablespoon. Although sea moss doesn’t really taste of much, some people find the texture of certain gels a bit too slimy to swallow without mixing it into something else. Best sea moss to buy in the UK
