This place is heaven for nature lovers who are looking to get the kids off tech, or for those who just fancy a romantic weekend away. The Treehouses At Leckie offers four eco-friendly treehouses and we enjoyed a blissful two nights in the Wren. Beautifully named after local birdlife, we found ourselves strategically placed within the thick branches of an old oak tree with the most incredible views over farmland and the Gargunnock Hills beyond.

In fact, the Leckie estate is one of the few spots in Scotland from which you can see Loch Lomond, Edinburgh and Stirling, as it climbs southward from 20 metres above sea level to a breathtaking 485. All four treehouses are built largely using timber sourced on the Leckie estate, keeping the carbon footprint low. Plus, airtight construction, heat pumps and log-burning stoves keep the output to a minimum, so you can rest assured that you’re holidaying and doing your best bit for the environment, too. On arrival we were welcomed with a basket packed with fresh bread from local, award-winning Tower Bakery, strawberry jam and eggs. Plus, a large roll of Abernethy butter and some fresh milk was waiting in the fridge. Such a treat after a long drive!

We slept five people comfortably in the Wren treehouse, with plenty of space to still enjoy privacy. The master room was stunning, with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the views – set your alarm to catch the break-of-dawn blue tits hopping merrily around your window. The children’s bedroom was a delight, with solid-wood bunk beds and faux-fur throws for extra cosiness – not that you needed them with the underfloor heating and, of course, that log-burning stove. The star of the show was waiting for our arrival in the bathroom, though. In there, we found a door leading outside to private decking and an outdoor, freestanding metal bathtub.

Filled high with toasty hot bubbles, what a treat to lie back under the stars, a glass of fizz in hand and not a care in the world. We toasted marshmallows, we wandered in the woods and around waterfalls – on a spooky walk with torches at night, too – and we enjoyed early morning cuppas on the outdoor terrace, overlooking a wild, flooded pond area. Local wildlife including roe deer, red squirrels and all manner of birds enjoyed the space with us. And don’t miss the burn of water that the treehouse meanders over – otters, pine martens and badgers are often spotted here. Wrap up and enjoy a walk to the local village of Gargunnock, which is just a short 10-minute wander away where you’ll find the aptly named Gargunnock Inn. We were served the best fish, chips and tartare sauce, washed down with berry crumble, custard and, of course, a large glass of wine.

Days by the treehouse were perfect in early spring when we visited, with fresh buds blossoming, and with brighter mornings, we could enjoy the beauty of the area coming to life. For those visiting in warmer months, there is a complementary BBQ you can use, and we can imagine that wintertime here is simply magical, too. We highly recommend it here if you’re looking for a couple of nights somewhere memorable and off the beaten track. Go ahead and unleash your inner Tarzan and Jane – it’s simply mesmerising. How to book The Treehouses at Leckie A one-bedroom treehouse costs from £245 per night. Minimum two-night stay.
