Privacy NoticeSome people can be quite crafty. You’re not obligated to swap your pre-booked plane seat with someone who requests it, but often we might do it out of kindness. However, one man stood his ground and refused to give up his chosen seat on a recent flight – and when he discovered the real reason behind the request, he was relieved he did. Mark Roberts took to TikTok recently to share a word of caution after a woman asked him to switch seats with her, claiming she wanted to sit closer to her daughter – but he suspects there was an ulterior motive. “If someone asks you to switch seats with them on a commercial flight be cautious, because they don’t always have the best intentions,” warned the TikTok star.

After declining to switch seats, Mark is now “so glad” he declined. Detailing the situation, Mark revealed he was one of the first to board the flight and the “only one” in his row. He added: “As soon as I sit down this random lady taps me on the shoulder and she’s just like ‘my seat is right here’, pointing to the seat next to me, ‘but my daughter is a couple of aisles up, would you mind switching with her so we can sit next to each other? ‘.” Mark shared that ‘red flags’ started popping up in his mind, as he was seated in Premium Economy, and the only passengers ahead of him were in First Class – implying that’s where the daughter was seated. The TikTok star found it odd that the woman didn’t disclose this information upfront, for instance by asking: “Do you want my First Class seat? “. He asked to see the ticket, but the woman said her daughter had it, who she also went on to describe as eight years old with “brown hair and pig tails”. Mark replied to the woman, saying: “I’d be more than happy to switch with you if you just show me that ticket.” Then, all of a sudden, Mark explained the woman got “super lethargic” and “plops her bag into the overhead bin” and “falls” into the seat next to him and says: “Being a mother is so hard, I’ve been walking around all day, I’m sorry, I’m just so tired.” Eventually she said her daughter was sitting in seat 7A if he wanted to switch with her, but Mark felt like she had “pulled the number of of thin air,” so he politely refused, saying he would rather stay in his seat. “After I said that she became visibly upset and was like, ‘you wouldn’t understand what it takes to be a mother’.”

However, soon a “random dude” came down the aisle and tapped the woman on the shoulder, and told her she was sitting in his seat – and showed his ticket as proof. Mark then realised the woman’s actual seat was far down the back end of the plane. He was left wondering if he left, would she have just ‘taken it’ and refused to give it back? In the comment section, people explained what they assumed would have happened. One person said: “She refuses to give the seat back ‘because you gave it to her’ and then you get sat in the back of the plane so they stay on schedule.” Another person chimed in: “I assume she would’ve just taken it and refused to give it back.” However, Mark also pointed out that not every request to move should be viewed with suspicion, saying “because I feel there are genuine families that just want to sit together”.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
