The same ghd styler I’ve had for 10 years is now much cheaper at Amazon (Image: Harriet Morphy-Morris)For those seeking salon-quality hair at home, cordless hair styling tools are a must-have. I’ve been using the original ghd hair straightener for a decade and it’s still going strong. The classic black styler with its unique ceramic technology is arguably the face of the Good Hair Day (ghd) brand. While the Dyson Air Wrap and Shark’s FlexStyle offer advanced styling options, in my opinion, nothing beats the simplicity and affordability of ghd. I first added it to my Christmas list as a teenager and finally convinced my parents at 15 that it was worth the investment. The fact that it’s still going strong a decade later in 2024 speaks volumes. And now, it’s even more affordable thanks to Amazon’s Prime Day sale. This deal is part of Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, which runs until 11:59pm tonight, October 9. There are hundreds of discounts waiting to be snapped up. While it may be pricier than some Babyliss and Remington models, I’d argue that even the pre-sale price offers excellent value for money. The original styler I use, with its older red ghd branding, has since had an army of upgrades which you can see in its silver logo touches, and small detail additions (like the middle round on button instead of the older click switch).

Apart from that, it’s still home to quick heat-up times and ceramic plates that create a smooth glossy finish – and why would they change, these are the features that make the styler stand out from rival brands, reports the Liverpool Echo. The tool reaches a temperature of 185 degrees across both styling plates, but while that may sound damaging it’s designed to minimise the extreme heat. I’ve used the tool at least once a week since I got them 10 years ago (which is a frightening thought don’t get me wrong) but I’ve never been told by hair professionals that my hair is damaged or ridden with split ends…gulp. I always make sure to reach for a trusted hair protectant whether it’s in spray or oil form, like this BeautyWorks one. While I’ve been tempted to splurge on the Dyson AirWrap, I mean who hasn’t, I’ve never seen the need to add another styling tool to the ghd stylers I already own. I’ve managed to create numerous bouncy blow-dry looks over the years using just the original straightener.

After a quick blow-dry, I simply smooth out the top of my hair and halfway down, I twist outwards, pulling down as I go. Then, I grab an inexpensive roller and roll up in the direction of the curl. After setting for half an hour, this results in a full head of soft bouncy curls that actually last…. plus, there’s no messing about with round brushes. And while Amazon states in its sale listing ‘not just a straightener’ I can confirm that’s correct. The plates glide effortlessly through the hair allowing you to create tight curls or zigzag beachy summer waves as well as a sleek pin-straight look. My one gripe with my straighteners is how often I have to clean them, as they get older the ceramic plates do stick and hold residue from hairspray, serum and heat protectant very easily now (they didn’t when sparkling new). You can snag a pair of ghd Original Hair Straighteners for £95.99 here. Over on ghd’s site, the styling giant has launched a new limited edition model, the Iced Luxe Collection.
