Privacy NoticePrincess Margaret’s four grandchildren often keep a low profile, leading relatively normal lives and only making public appearances at significant national events like royal weddings, thanksgiving services and funerals. Despite being related to King Charles, the late princess’ eldest grandson, Samuel Chatto, rarely makes the headlines. And, as Sam celebrates his 28th birthday (28 July), who is he and how has he carved out a name for himself in the world of art? Sam is the eldest of Princess Margaret’s four grandchildren, which include his younger brother Arthur Chatto and their two cousins, Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones.

His parents are Margaret’s daughter Lady Sarah Chatto and her husband Daniel. The couple married in July 1994 and also have a younger son named Arthur. Born in London, Sam was educated at Eton College before studying history of art at the University of Edinburgh, much like many members of his family. Following in his mother’s footsteps, Sam has a keen interest in art and is an avid potter. After completing a six-week apprenticeship with North Shore Pottery, he showcased three of his pots in a Somerset show. Sam, who regularly shares enlightening and positive posts with his 91.2k Instagram followers, expressed his excitement about his pottery apprenticeship.

A few years back, he expressed his gratitude for personal growth in a heartfelt message: “2018 was such an incredible year of self reflection and growth for me. I spent six weeks in the very north of Scotland immersed in pottery and ceramics, being taught by the most patient and passionate potter. Clay consumed my every waking hour and I am so excited to see what I can achieve this year!” Besides his love of pottery, he is also a certified yoga instructor after finishing a 200-hour teacher training course in India by the close of 2018 an experience he described as “incredibly eye-opening”. In recent times, Sam made an appearance at the late Queen’s funeral services in London and Windsor, and was also present for King Charles’ Coronation last year. He has also frequently joined his parents at informal engagements, such as at both of Queen Camilla’s Reading Room Festivals at Hampton Court Palace. He was also a guest at the recent State Banquet at Buckingham Palace to welcome the Emperor and Empress of Japan.

His lineage is quite illustrious with his grandmother Princess Margaret being the younger offspring of King George VI and sister to the late Queen. In a grand wedding in 1960 at none other than Westminster Abbey, she tied the knot with the famed society snapper Antony Armstrong-Jones, who was given the title of 1st Earl of Snowdon. Offspring were sure to follow with David Armstrong-Jones, now bearing the Earl of Snowdon title (born in 1961), and Lady Sarah Chatto joining the family. Margaret and Armstrong-Jones broke new ground when they separated in 1978, marking the first divorce within the Royal kin since none other than Henry VIII. They remained at Kensington Palace with their mother, up until venturing off to establish their own households.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
