Sky News’ Kay Burley halted her morning show to announce a breaking news update on Tuesday. During her breakfast show, Kay told viewers that the UK’s population is on course to swell to 72.5 million by mid-2032. She highlighted that this growth spurt is largely propelled by net migration, with an anticipated influx of around 4.9 million by 2023, as per the Office for National Statistics (ONS). By 2032, with an estimated increase of five million denizens, the population figure is projected to soar. Discussing the stats, Burley noted, “They are telling us that the UK population is projected to rise by almost five million, that’s 7.3 per cent from 2022 to 2032.”

Furthermore, she probed Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s infrastructure plans, alluding to vital requirements: “All that infrastructure that we’re hearing about from the prime minister, we’re going to need it, aren’t we? Because apparently the population is projected to rise by 7.3 per cent in the next 10 years.” Wrapping up her segment, Burley pondered, “Almost five million extra people here in the UK during that time. I’m sure the prime minister will have something to say about that, along with the chancellor when they make their speeches tomorrow.” Chris Philp, Shadow Home Secretary, raised concerns about the immigration numbers: “Ten million arrivals over ten years is far too high. We need a binding legal cap on visas issued each year which is very, very substantially lower than this in order to get the numbers down and under control,” reports the Mirror. Tory MP and former Home Office advisor, Nick Timothy, echoed similar sentiments: “Today the ONS forecasts the annual net migration will be half a million a year for the next decade.”

He strongly advocated for a drastic reduction in numbers, stating: “This must not happen. We need to cut the numbers drastically. And we need to deport the criminals and illegal immigrants who should not be here.” According to projections, England’s population is set to experience the fastest growth among UK nations by mid-2032, with a 7.8% increase, outpacing Wales at 5.9%, Scotland at 4.4%, and Northern Ireland at 2.1%. Kay Burley has hosted Sky News’ breakfast show for the past five years, however in December, the TV presenter was rumoured to be quitting. TV insiders hinted that she may be leaving – although there were murmurs of a network reshuffle which could see her remain in some capacity.
