Privacy NoticeKate Middleton reportedly has a catchphrase she uses to keep her children’s behaviour in line when they’re being naughty. Known as her ‘secret code’ it is said to help ‘calm the children’, which can be used during public royal events. The Prince and Princess of Wales, known for their hands-on parenting approach with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, often let the public glimpse their children’s cheeky personalities. The youngsters, particularly George and Charlotte, are notorious for pulling funny faces during public appearances, while little Louis made headlines when he stole the spotlight at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

However, when Kate feels their antics are crossing a line, she resorts to a ‘code’ to issue a warning. This was revealed by royal expert Tom Quinn in his book Gilded Youth, An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family. He penned: “When Prince Louis misbehaved at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee for example, by sticking his tongue out at his mother, Kate’s reaction was praised by a team of expert commentators. She apparently used a secret code to calm the children, as she does on occasions – she simply says ‘let’s take a break’. But as a former staffer explained, the children know these few words carry far more weight than we might imagine.” George, Charlotte, and Louis are no strangers to strict rules even at home in Adelaide Cottage. When emotions run high or tempers flare, Kate and William opt for a ‘sofa chat’ with the young royals, ensuring they’re supported rather than isolated with their feelings, guiding them through understanding the situation, reports the Mirror. William and Kate also enforce a ‘no shouting’ policy. Any child who raises their voice is taken out of the situation, and interestingly, the parents maintain their composure too, never raising their voices when disciplining the children. A royal insider once revealed to The Sun that Kate tends to be “slightly stricter” than William. They also shared that the couple’s trusted nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, always aligns with them on disciplinary matters. The source said: “Maria is firm but she never acts unilaterally with the children on discipline. Kate and William, along with Maria, are strict with the children but have this magic ability to appear not to be. It is a military operation but you would never guess it because they work ferociously hard on their children’s upbringing and making it seem relaxed and happy for the three of them. They are very good at listening to the children but being firm.” Maria has been the trusted royal nanny since 2014, hailing from sunny Spain and boasting an impressive education from Norland College, renowned for pioneering childcare training. At this prestigious institution, students master a spectrum of skills, from understanding child brain development and first aid to executing evasive driving manoeuvres.

Royal expert Victoria Murphy dished the details to ABC News back in May 2015 and revealed: “The nannies are taught everything from defensive driving to security issues to how to care for a future king or queen.” She added: “So [Borrallo] just really knows everything that you could possibly need to know about bringing up a child.”
