Privacy Notice Kate Middleton, now honoured with the title of Princess of Wales, remains endearingly down-to-earth to those in her inner circle, including Prince William and her own family who lovingly call her Catherine or the familiar Kate. Yet it has come to light that before she became William’s wife, a rather unflattering pet name was coined by his ‘snooty’ friends, poking fun at her mother Carole Middleton’s past occupation as a British Airways flight attendant. They would slyly say “Doors to Manual” in reference to the Princess, as Royal expert Katie Nicholl divulged on the Vanity Fair Dynasty podcast. Katie highlighted Kate’s dignified response: “To her full credit, Kate never rose to it – the snootiness of the upper classes levelled at what they called the en-masse Middletons.”

There’s no doubt that the mean-spirited moniker wasn’t water off a duck’s back, but an aide confided to the Sunday Times Magazine that Kate, resilient and composed, never allowed it to rattle her. The aide recalled: “It was never water off a duck’s back, but she has extraordinary strength of character and resilience. I’ve never once seen or heard of her losing her temper.” Since marrying Prince William 12 years ago and settling down to start a family with their three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, Kate Middleton has become an essential part of the Royal Family and is on her way to becoming Queen consort. When the Princess of Wales made an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show and when asked by a schoolgirl about what it’s like being a royal, she gave a refreshingly honest five-word response: “You have to work hard”.

During her visits, she hung out with schoolchildren as they looked around the attractions which included a walled kitchen garden created by Mark Gregory. Kate took some time to enjoy a little picnic with the young ones, indulging in their curiosity about her princess life with her straightforward reply, “You have to work hard”. The youngsters were even let in on a little secret about Prince Louis’ green fingers at school, where he’s been nurturing broad beans in the garden. Plus, Kate showed off her artistic side, choosing to sketch flowers and plants as a unique memento for the children instead of giving an ordinary signature.

The Princess didn’t miss a chance to meet with veterans, the Chelsea Pensioners, who were featured in Gregory’s garden design. They enjoyed a specially arranged dining area complete with a kitchen destined to whip up meals using local produce for these seasoned individuals. As the pensioners savoured chargrilled peas seasoned with herbs, Harry Puttick, a 30-year veteran of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, delivered a memorable line to Kate while discussing the meal: “The peas are forgettable, you are not.” The spirited senior couldn’t resist complimenting the chef within earshot, quipping: “I’d better say the peas were wonderful, but it was fantastic to meet the future Queen.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
