Privacy Notice Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, attended this year’s Wimbledon final on 14 July following a break from the public eye amid her cancer treatment, bringing along her daughter Princess Charlotte. But it wasn’t just her return that caught the eye; fashion-savvy fans were quick to spot Kate’s subtle tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Breaking from her usual style, Kate dazzled in a purple dress by Safiyaa, mirroring the hue Diana wore to Wimbledon 33 years prior. Seated alongside Charlotte, Kate’s poise at the match was a poignant echo of Diana’s as she watched with a young Prince William by her side. An Instagram user highlighted the striking similarity, captioning their post: “1991 vs 2024: Two loving mothers at Wimbledon.” The nostalgic connections didn’t end there – Prince William was nine years old when he accompanied Diana, the same age as Princess Charlotte during this iconic tennis event.

Typically, the Royal box is off-limits to children, but there have been exceptions for young Royals in the past. For instance, Prince George joined his parents in these exclusive seats in 2022 and 2023. However, this year, both Prince William and Prince George were absent from the event as they had flown to Berlin to watch England play Spain in the Euros 2024 final. Over the years, William and Kate have often attended Wimbledon, sharing a love for tennis that Diana also had. The Princess was a regular at the tournament during the 80s and 90s, bringing William with her for the first time in 1991 and again in 1994. Diana’s last appearance was in 1995, a year before her divorce from then-Prince Charles was finalised and two years before her tragic death at 36. Even decades after her untimely death, her daughters-in-law Meghan Markle and Princess Kate continue to draw fashion inspiration from her, often incorporating subtle tributes to her in their outfits and accessories.

Now holding the title once held by Diana, some believe that the new Princess of Wales may have drawn inspiration from her late mother-in-law in choosing her striking purple ensemble for this year’s Wimbledon appearance – notably, it was the first occasion Kate opted for purple at the event. Bethan Holt, Fashion Director at the Daily Telegraph, shared with PEOPLE: “Kate has a history of choosing clever, whimsical themes for her Wimbledon looks, and this was a new one. Wearing purple underlines how important that role is to her and why she chose this event to make her second public appearance of the year.” “It’s also the colour of courage, which could be a nod to what she is going through,” Holt continued. Moreover, purple is traditionally seen as a Royal hue, possibly alluding to Kate’s prominent position as the spouse of the heir apparent. The colour is often linked to ambition and goal-setting, potentially signalling her positive stance in the face of her current health challenges.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
