His highly-rated panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is back on Channel 4, followed by his gameshow, Jimmy Carr’s I Literally Just Told You. However, it hasn’t all been a barrel of laughs for the star, as in 2022, it was widely reported that his father, 77 year old Jim Carr Sr, was ‘going to sue’ his son for defamation after years of ‘being the butt of his jokes.’ The businessman has reportedly been estranged from his son for over twenty years and in 2022, it was reported Jim Carr Sr finally decided to call in the lawyers after reading his memoir Before and Laughter, which was released in September 2021. OK! has contacted representatives of Jimmy Carr for comment.

A source close to the family told The Mirror at the time: “The last thing Jim wanted to do was take his own son to court, but enough is enough. He’s sick and tired of this false characterisation of himself that is being presented.” The source continued: “Jimmy’s snide comments about his dad have been going on for years. The straw that broke the camel’s back was this new book and some of the things he has been saying on podcasts. I know it’s fashionable nowadays not to get on with your father, but Jim’s had enough of the lies. He is a businessman and has a reputation to defend. The only way to put a stop to the nonsense is by suing for defamation.” It is not clear whether he went ahead with legal action or whether it was dropped. Jimmy is no stranger to controversy. He previously caused outrage with a joke he made on his Netflix special His Dark Material, which was released on Christmas Day 2021. Some viewers deemed the special “cruel and inhumane” for making light of the Holocaust. The comedian was raised in Buckinghamshire by his Irish parents. His mother, Nora, sadly passed away from pancreatitis in 2001 at the age of 57. It was around this time that Jimmy reportedly stopped speaking to his father.

In 2004, Jimmy is said to have hurled accusations of harassment at his dad but the claims were thrown out of court. Now well-settled in North London with his girlfriend and two little ones, he opened up about his rocky relationship with his father on a podcast last year: “I haven’t seen my dad in 21 years and you know the line, ‘My mother’s dead and my father’s dead to me’ which sounds very cold, until you meet the guy.” When asked about the situation at the time, Carr Sr simply said: “I have no comment to make.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
