Privacy Notice Jay Slater’s situation was described as “treacherous” and “virtually impossible” for him to escape from, according to an army veteran appearing on Good Morning Britain with hosts Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley. Chris Pennington – who spent weeks searching for the missing teen – gave a chilling account on Tuesday’s show, 16 July, after a body was discovered in Tenerife’s Masca region. He hauntingly noted that once Jay was in that area, it was essentially “game over”. The Lancashire lad, 19, disappeared on 17 June following a festival in Tenerife and was last seen in the Rural de Teno national park. After the body was found, following a search with dogs, it led to a complex recovery operation involving a helicopter from the emergency rescue service.

In a conversation with Richard and Kate, Chris detailed the perilous nature of the location where Jay Slater is thought to have been found, emphasising the ease of becoming trapped there, which led Kate to echo the sentiment of the area being “treacherous” and Chris to affirm, “It really is, game over.” Compounding the tragedy, Jay had been in contact with his close friends before he went missing, and the deceptive geography of the area likely contributed to a fatal error as he attempted to navigate back to safety, reports the Mirror. Chris further explained the deceptive nature of the terrain to Richard and Kate, highlighting how the elevation can make the coast appear much closer than it actually is, adding another layer of danger to the already perilous situation. He then detailed the harrowing journey: “The coast is actually some 10 kilometres, and the challenges he would have had to go through to get there would have been unbearable.” He somberly added: “It would have been virtually impossible for Jay to make his way back.”

In the early stages of the search for the missing teenager, Jay Slater’s relatives were supported in Tenerife by ex-police detective Mark Williams-Thomas, known for his involvement in high-profile missing persons cases, as local authorities’ efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. However, following the distressing find, Jay’s mum Debbie has expressed her profound sorrow and frustration. “Debbie is completely devastated. It’s the news they’ve all been dreading. She has a lot of questions which she hopes will be answered in the coming days,” a source close to the Oswaldtwistle-based family revealed. “It hasn’t completely sunk in yet. The hardest thing for her is to hear he was found so close to the original search site. It’s hard to take. It means it’s entirely possible they have walked past his body whilst searching for him.” The body has not yet been formally identified.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
