Privacy NoticeHe’s best known for writing and starring in Gavin & Stacey, as well as hosting The Late Late Show, but James Corden’s TV career actually began on a CBBC programme. The star made his first television appearance in 1996, when he was 18 years old. James, 45, portrayed a character named Lee in the kids TV sitcom Out of Tune, which aired from 1996 until 1998. Out of Tune followed a group of children who are part of a church choir at a school. The fictional show focused on the kids’ practise sessions and the various events that frequently disrupted them. Out of Tune aired on BBC One on certain weekdays, with a total of 40 episodes across three series.

James wasn’t the only famous face to begin his career on Out of Tune. Soap legend Jane Danson, AKA Coronation Street’s Leanne Battersby, also starred in the kids series, as well as Charlie Brooks, famed for portraying Janine Butcher in EastEnders. Out of Tune finished airing in 1998, with the third series being the last. Repeats of the show were occasionally shown on CBBC in the years that followed. Actresses Jane and Charlie both went on to carve out impressive careers in soapland, while James continued acting, but also turned his hand to writing, presenting and producing. James landed his first TV reporter role shortly after, going on to interview Meat Loaf on BBC’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick. He also appeared in adverts and made appearances in shows such as Little Britain, Hollyoaks and Dalziel and Pascoe.

Following some small film roles, James appeared in TV series Fat Friends as Jamie Rymer from 2000 until 2005. Arguably, James’ big break came in 2007 when he began starring in hit BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey. The show, which James co-wrote with Ruth Jones, proved to be immensely popular with TV viewers. Gavin & Stacey won a number of awards, including several BAFTAs, and helped propel James and Ruth, along with their co-stars, Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, to stardom. Numerous TV roles followed for James, as well as presenting gigs, but his next huge break came in 2015, when he took over hosting The Late Late Show in the US. This gig helped to launch his career in the US and he found worldwide fame. James left The Late Late Show in 2023 and moved back to the UK. The first-ever episode of Gavin & Stacey is on BBC 2 on Friday, 9 August at 10pmStory SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
