The beloved star, alongside his colleague Philip Glenister of the legendary series Life On Mars, embarks on a quest to unravel their family origins, only to encounter some truly startling truths. Throughout the episode, the duo faces a rollercoaster of emotions, handling their discoveries with genuine candor, a touch of humour, and brotherly support. Meanwhile, Phil’s own search through his ancestry brings up quite the surprises, including untold riches and fame seated deep within his lineage. It all begins with John reflecting on a revealing chat with his mum about his birth: “When they had me, in the sixties, they were both young…they were together and then they split up and were both with other people and then they got back together and then they had me. And I’d never heard this story before.” In a touching revelation, the film follows John and Phil to Featherstone, Yorkshire, where they uncover that John’s biological father, who has now sadly passed away, had an eerily close presence in their lives without them knowing. Historian Brad breaks the news to a stunned John, who learns of past coincidences that seem pulled straight from a movie script, reports the Express.

Shocked by the revelation, John says: “The thing that blows my mind, me and my dad, we played around here loads of times, we definitely played here a lot and he might have been in the same pub one night and watched me play.” As the documentary progresses, John and his companion meet with a club steward, a long-time resident, who adds another layer to the story confirming John’s biological father’s residence above a local working men’s club.

The show will air emotional scenes

Struggling to process this information, John reflects: “I can’t get it out of my head, because we played this area in the 80s and he was here and he was in working men’s clubs. It’s one of those mad, Back To The Future, Life On Mars things.” Amid the emotion-tangled journey, John lays eyes on photographs of his late father and delves into his history, including the discovery of a half-sister. Overwhelmed, John confesses his initial hesitance about continuing with the series before ultimately choosing to embrace the journey to learn more about his biological father’s life.
