The 61-year-old actor, who has won over fans as DI Sunil Khan since the show’s inception in 2015, addressed the curiosity surrounding his character’s black bag and its contents. While chatting on BBC’s The One Show on Friday (January 31), Sanjeev revealed the backstory behind the backpack after some viewers criticised it for making him look like a schoolboy. He told hosts Ross Kemp and Clara Amfo: “There was a lot of weird criticism that I got after the first series about why my character had a backpack- I just chose a bag that was practical.”

He added: “They kind of said ‘he looks like a child, he doesn’t wear it properly.'” To add an element of surprise, from the second series, Sanjeev requested the costume department secretly fill the backpack with random items, which he wouldn’t discover until the end of filming each day. Among the quirky contents they included were a photo of his co-star Sinéad Keenan, who portrays DCI Jessica James, and even a blow-up guitar, reports Wales Online.

The hit crime drama Unforgotten is making a grand return to ITV with its sixth season, after leaving fans in pieces following the heartbreaking goodbye to lead character DCI Cassie Stuart, played by the talented Nicola Walker, whose storyline tragically ended in season four. The first episode of the last series saw the team investigating the discovery of a severed leg inside a chimney, setting the stage for a murder mystery. It also featured a tense moment between DCI Jessica and Sunny, who is still mourning the tragic death of his colleague.
Series is six coming to screens soon
Viewers have been pouring their hearts out on Twitter, with one fan posting: “Omg, that was truly heartbreaking, Cassie we miss you.” This emotional return of Unforgotten coincides with ITV spicing up their crime drama line-up with the introduction of Protection, a fresh six-part police show to look forward to. The One Show airs Mondays-Fridays at 7pm on BBC One.
