Chas has been grappling with back pain since the catastrophic limo accident last month, and has been relying on strong painkillers to cope with the discomfort. In Wednesday (March 19) night’s gripping episode, Liam Cavanagh noticed his fiancée popping more pills, and cautioned her against working if she wasn’t feeling up to it. Ignoring Liam’s concerns, Chas decided to tidy up the bar, but ended up collapsing and striking her head. John Sugden stumbled upon an unconscious Chas when he arrived at The Woolpack to visit his future mother-in-law, prompting him to get Victoria to dial for an ambulance, reports Leeds Live.

At the hospital, doctors revealed to Liam and Aaron that Chas had high opioid levels in her bloodstream, and questioned whether she had been following her codeine prescription correctly. Chas insisted she had taken her medication “exactly” as prescribed, while Liam stressed that he had been diligently “monitoring” her dosage. “There’s no way she’s overdosed, I would have noticed,” he asserted, but the doctor stood by the test results. The plot thickened in Thursday’s (March 20) episode, which is now available on ITVX, where Liam suspects his former flame Ella Forster of tampering with Chas’s medication during their engagement celebration. Ella was subsequently arrested on suspicion of tampering with the medication, but was later released pending further investigation. After receiving an ultimatum from Chas at The Woolpack, Ella shared her suspicions that Chas had become overly reliant on the pills and was manipulating Liam into thinking she was to blame.

However, some fans have speculated that Chas’s symptoms could indicate something more serious. Many have taken to social media to express their concerns about her cancer returning. Chas was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer last year, the same disease that took her mum Faith’s life back in 2022. Following her diagnosis, Chas opted for a double mastectomy to prevent further recurrence. “Am thinking Chas’s cancer is back and that’s why she is in a lot of pain with her back,” one person posted on an Emmerdale Facebook page. “Well it wouldn’t surprise me because she didn’t have chemo. All triple negative breast cancer patients are offered chemo and advised strongly to have it,” another added, while a third commented: “Hope not but am thinking you could be right.” A fourth fan echoed these thoughts, saying: “Yes that’s what I think, it has spread to her bones.” Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX More information or support about living with breast cancer or treatment is available from organisations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Coppafeel!, Cancer Research UK and Stand Up to Cancer
