Privacy NoticeBeloved sports presenter Clare Balding totally transformed her fitness regime after finding clothes shopping a nightmare due to her weight. The 53 year old star, who will host the BBC’s coverage of evening swimming events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, as well as the opening ceremony, has been on an incredible weight loss journey, attributing her success to one key change in her daily routine. Clare is married to fellow broadcaster Alice Arnold, 62, and has embraced the simple act of walking, clocking up an impressive 12,000 steps a day alongside playing golf, which has helped her to shed the pounds. In a candid chat with Radio 4, Clare shared: “I know how much the walking helps me because it gets you out for quite a long time.”

She continued, highlighting the ease of the activity: “It’s not a painful sort of exercise, you don’t feel like you’re suffering. And it’s a great way to get to know your local area.” On Clare Balding’s Ramblings, listeners go on a walk through the countryside with various interesting people. Her Instagram is a treasure trove of stunning vistas from her walks, reports the Express. Lockdown saw many people turn to walking as a respite, but Clare proves it’s a wonderful pastime to continue even as life returns to normal. For those who find the gym intimidating or running too strenuous, walking offers a free, accessible, and enjoyable option. With this straightforward lifestyle tweak, Clare has reportedly lost around 1.4 stone. Shopping for clothes had become distressing for Clare, who confessed that she would often cry in fitting rooms when “because nothing fits”. Battling feelings of inadequacy, she decided it was time for a change. Now, not only does Clare look trimmer, but her self-esteem has also seen a significant lift, and walking is known to be beneficial for mental well-being. On her Instagram, Clare talks about the “healing power of the great outdoors” and describes her walks as both “exhilarating and exhausting”.

Appearing on the cover of Good Housekeeping back in 2014, Clare opened up about a pivotal moment that led her to focus on her well-being, sharing: “I got a bit lazy about it and then my mother said something. That always wakes you up a bit. She is very pleased with me now, though!” “Sometimes you do need a kick up the bum, and I think I did. I wasn’t feeling great last summer, and I thought it would be a good time to start eating more salads, fruits and rice cakes.” “The main thing is I walk like crazy. I walk the dog every day for an hour in the morning and 40 minutes in the evening. I walk at 4mph, which is pretty quick,” she said. “I also play golf and go to the gym occasionally with Alice, but not often, as I’m not a member. I do lots of special sit ups, too, which my sister-in-law showed me. They really hurt.” She added: “I’m not obsessed about losing weight, but I feel so much healthier. It can be depressing to go shopping when you’re not the size you want to be, so it’s much more fun now.” For those looking to up their walking game, Clare suggests engaging your core, introducing interval pacing, or carrying a weighted rucksack to really maximise the benefits of a good hike. Clare previously opened up about pal Anne Robinson using her weight “as a stick to beat me with” during her appearance on The Weakest Link. Speaking on The Mid-Point podcast with Gabby Logan, Clare recalled her time filming the programme when she went up against football pundit Graeme Le Saux, 55. “Many years ago I did The Weakest Link when she was presenting it, and I got through to a head to head against Graeme Le Saux who as you will know is very very bright. Luckily I did okay and I won,” she explained to Gabby, 51. Following the victory, Clare explained that she had to do an interview. She continued: “Through the course of it, Anne had been very cutting and had talked a bit about when I was an amateur jockey, and why did I give up? I said, ‘Look at me, I got too heavy, right.’ So then she would constantly use the line of, ‘Who ate too many cookies?’”

Clare said Anne roasted her during her time on The Weakest Link

Clare went on to share how she took it in her stride as at the end of the interview she poked fun back at Anne by calling her a “crusty old cow”. “I said in the interview at the end, ‘Well, Anne used my weight as a stick to beat me with, but if that makes the crusty old cow happy, that’s fine!’ I thought, ‘They’ll never use that.’ It goes out and they used that as the last line, and I thought, ‘Oh god…’ “Two days later I got a handwritten letter on lovely headed paper from Gloucestershire. ‘Dear Clare, I watched your edition of The Weakest Link. You sparkled, and your intelligence and wit…’. Da da da… It was all really nice and I thought, ‘Thank God she didn’t see the interview at the end.’ I turned over the page and it said, ‘I do hope we work together soon. With love, the Crusty Old Cow.'”
