Christmas in our home is all about family time, but organising endless festive outings with the kids can be a bit of a challenge. I reckon we’ve visited our local garden centre five times already… One activity that’s a hit with everyone is a light trail. We headed to Bute Park in the heart of Cardiff for our first family Christmas experience with our six month old – it’s the ultimate sensory treat for little ones. The park itself is massive and stunning, but what really took our breath away was the backdrop of Cardiff Castle – dating back to 50AD – which stands majestically in the centre of the Welsh capital.

Before setting off on the dazzling trail, we indulged in some local treats at the small Christmas village within the grounds. You’ll be spoilt for choice, with all the festive goodies you could dream of including scrumptious mulled wine or cider, luxury hot chocolate, the best churros we’ve ever had and German sausages. The four-time award-winning event takes you on a journey with beautifully crafted lights by world renowned artists paired with music that complements the display. Our favourite part was called End Of The Rainbow, which focuses on two enormous 400 year old trees in the grounds. Wrapped in thousands of computer-programmed lights, the trees come alive as they sway to beautifully composed music. We actually caused a bit of a queue here because we wanted to stop and fully soak it all in, reports the Mirror. The highlight of the display, especially for the kids, was undoubtedly the light sabres that pierced through the woods, giving off a Matrix movie vibe.

There are plenty of pit stops along the trail for another mulled wine or even some marshmallows roasted over fire pits. It felt like we were living our American camp dream, but in the UK – and a bit chillier! After this delightful walk, we popped into Daffodil gastropub just around the corner for a taste of Welsh cuisine. Everything on the menu is locally sourced and you can also try some of the country’s specialities, including Welsh cawl (a hearty stew of veg and meat) and Bara Brith (a rich fruit loaf made with tea). We devoured Welsh rarebit croquettes for starters before digging into lamb cawl by a roaring fire, warming our hands after our winter stroll.
