If watching BBC’s The Traitors has got you dreaming of visiting Scotland, staycations don’t get more quintessentially Scottish than staying at Cameron House, a huge mansion-style hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond, about 40 minutes north of Glasgow. The staff wear tartan uniforms, there’s a towering wall of whiskies to sample in the bar, and if you arrive on a Friday or Saturday you’ll be welcomed with bagpipes at the hotel’s grand entrance. Dating back to the early 18th century, the building has an interesting history, even operating as a bear park at one point before becoming the standout destination it is today for weekenders and holidaymakers from around the world. Plenty of famous faces have stayed here including Winston Churchill, Barack Obama and Sir Alex Ferguson. Consisting of around 200 rooms and suites plus self-catering lodges, along with a cinema, a family-friendly indoor pool and a golf course and luxe spa a couple of miles up the road, there’s something for everyone at Cameron House. Keen for more of a serene than a splashy experience, we spent a morning at the latter, where we enjoyed the steam rooms, bubbly pools and a detoxifying rasul mud treatment before a fresh and tasty lunch in the spa’s café. The food at Cameron House You won’t be short on options for eating and drinking at Cameron House, with three restaurants and three bars. Cameron Grill is the hotel’s traditional eatery, where you’ll find the likes of cooked-to-perfection Scottish beef, truffle and parmesan chips and seasonal desserts. If you’re after something a little different, La Vista down by the estate’s marina serves up delicious Italian dishes, including the biggest slices of focaccia we’d ever seen. For drinks, The Tavern is a relaxed sports bar, while Great Scots’ Bar serves unique cocktails inspired by some of the country’s most famous names, photos of whom also line the walls.

What to do at Cameron House I highly recommend booking onto the hotel’s champagne cruise, not just for the stunning views around the UK’s largest lake (by surface area) and the delicious local fizz. You’ll also be entertained by endless fascinating facts about the loch, with some of the more unusual points of interest including a nudist colony, a Game Of Thrones actor’s house and an island inhabited by wallabies. Outside the estate, it’s an easy walk to the pretty little resort town of Balloch, and if you’re planning to head north on further adventures, Loch Lomond serves as the perfect gateway to the absolutely breathtaking Scottish Highlands.
