Privacy NoticeHomes Under The Hammer’s Martel Maxwell has opened up about her battle with undiagnosed menopause, and revealed the alarming moment she forgot the word for ‘carpet’ on set. The TV presenter noticed something was “terribly wrong” when she began misplacing things at home and experiencing tension with her husband Jamie Parrat. But it was when the 46 year old lost her words in public, including during a school drop-off and while filming, that she realised the severity of the issue. In her column for The Courier, she shared: “I’d been filming Homes Under The Hammer when, during a piece to camera, as I was describing the swirly oranges and browns of dated decor, I had to stop mid-way because I couldn’t remember the word for carpet.”

Desperate for help, she turned to her cameraman, gesturing at the floor and asking, “What’s it called again?” To which her colleague, confused, responded: “Er, a carpet? ” Although they resumed filming, the incident lingered in Martel’s mind. On another occasion, she found herself unable to say “bye” to her children at school, instead just waving “inanely”. She confessed that these moments felt “unbelievable as it sounds” and led to a profound sadness as she felt “normal life and emotions was always a little out of reach”. Confronted with memory lapses, “hot flushes”, and sudden “anger”, the BBC personality feared “there was something terribly wrong with me”.

The BBC presenter shared in her column that after a visit to the doctor and receiving an unexpected diagnosis of early perimenopause, all her symptoms, including brain fog and memory loss, suddenly clicked into place. Reflecting on this, she admitted that she “should have known that’s what it was” but, like many others, had underestimated its impact on her. Now she’s been diagnosed and the TV host disclosed that she is using HRT patches which aid in “protect bones and brain”. Martel expressed feeling “lucky” to have had children and to be undergoing treatment that “generations before didn’t have”.

She also extended some encouraging words for other women experiencing or approaching perimenopause, warmly reassuring: “I’m here to tell you it’s ok. You’ll get out the other side and be stronger yet softer for it.” “Look at all the research which shows we hit a low point in midlife but emerge happier and looking for a deeper meaning to the rest of our lives. And look at me.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK! MagazineFacebookTwitterCommentMore OnHomes Under The Hammer
