Kate graduated drama school in Swindon and soon won her first screen role in Sky footballing soap Dream Team in 1988. While the couple have never confirmed when and where they first met, they first acted together in the 2001 drama Is Harry On The Boat?. They then wed in May 2004 in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

The couple obviously enjoy working together as they have made quite a habit of it over the years, with roles in 24 Hour Party People (2002), Devilwood (2006) and Tuesday (2008), as well as playing parts in the BBC 2011 series, Exile. In 2013, Kate found soap fame in EastEnders playing beauty salon owner Sadie Young for six months. Her character was married to alcoholic Jake Stone – played by Hollyoaks’ Jamie Lomas – and eventually left the Square after she realised that Jake was sleeping with Lauren Branning (Jaqueline Jossa).

Meanwhile, the couple made a big move themselves a few years later when the family moved from London to Brighton during a Covid lockdown. “Goodbye London, it’s been memorable. Hello BRIGHTON!” she posted. Brighton is now where John lives and works as Grace is filmed there. The couple rarely talk of their relationship, but in a 2019 interview with The Guardian, when John was starring as Macbeth on stage, he was asked whether his relationship with Kate bore any similarities to Lady Macbeth from the play. “Only in the fact that he worships her, and she is the glue that holds everything together,” John said. Kate isn’t John’s only celeb romance link, however. In his younger days, he had a brief romance with none other than Emma Bunton of Spice Girls fame, but the pressures of fame soon broke them up.
