Privacy NoticeGogglebox star Mary Killen revealed she was once close to death after contracting an infection which caused her body to start “shutting down”. Mary, who appears on the hit Channel 4 show – which is on our screens tonight – alongside husband Giles Wood, opened up about the terrifying experience back in 2018. She told the Guardian: “The closest I’ve come to death was contracting Legionnaires’ disease in 1999. I caught it from air conditioning in the Bahamas and developed something called Beau’s lines: white ridges across the fingernails which are a sign that your body’s shutting down for death.” She added: “It knocked the stuffing out of me. I’ve never been quite the same since.”

According to the NHS website, Legionnaires’ disease is a lung infection you can get from inhaling droplets of water from things like air conditioning or hot tubs. While it’s uncommon, it can be very serious. It’s usually caught in places like hotels, hospitals or offices where the bacteria have got into the water supply. It’s less common to catch it at home. Symptoms include a cough, shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort, particularly when breathing or coughing, a high temperature and flu-like symptoms. You should call NHS 111 if you’re coughing up blood, experiencing chest pain that comes and goes or feeling short of breath. Mary and Giles, who have been married for over 30 years, joined the fifth series of Gogglebox in 2015 and have become fan favourites ever since. They’re known for their eccentric ways and funny one-liners, often poking fun at each other. Sign up to OK!’s daily newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

The couple shot to fame in 2015

The couple, who live in a Wiltshire farmhouse, refer to each other as “nutty”, previously leaving some viewers baffled. Opening up about the nickname, Mary explained: “We call each other ‘nutty’ because we both consider the other to be a bit mad. Giles has multiple personality disorder so he’s all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius. The truth is we’re both neurotic.” She’s also revealed that taking part in Gogglebox “saved” their marriage, as they barely used to see each other. She said: “Giles and I were like ships that pass in the night. I got up early, he went to bed late and we rarely even ate together.” Mary and Giles, both in their 50s, met when they were 21. Mary was working as a model at the time, while Giles was studying at Wimbledon Art College. They share two grown up daughters, who prefer to stay out of the limelight.
