Privacy NoticeGogglebox fans were left astonished and amazed after finding out that former show star Josh Tapper had quit being a couch critic to pursue a new high profile career in politics. The 26-year-old stood in the general election after being selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hertsmere. Announcing the huge career shift, he shared: “I’m thrilled and honoured to have been selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hertsmere. Thank you so much to local members for your support – I won’t let you down. The work to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister starts now!” Josh found fame on the Channel Four show starring alongside his dad Jonathan, mum Nikki, and sister Amy, but in 2017, Josh revealed he quit to “focus” on his career. Many TV fans took to social media to share their disbelief at seeing the TV personality compete for a seat in Downing Street, with one person penning: “Is that Josh Tapper from Gogglebox?”

Another added: “The Gogglebox guy? What’s going on,” while a third joked that he was running to “become the MP covering the Strictly and EastEnders area.” But Josh proved to be a popular candidate, securing almost 14,000 votes, with one person on social media delighted to see the TV star in the running. “As someone who worked on the first 3 series of Gogglebox, it’s a delight to see Josh Tapper using his platform to help promote the NHS & renewable energy,” penned the supporter. However, sadly for Josh, it wasn’t meant to be this time, with former Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Conservative candidate Oliver Dowden being re-elected instead. It comes as Josh also prepares to wed his childhood sweetheart, Hannah Sterman, who he has been with since their early teens. In March, his sister Amy shared the happy news of their engagement on Instagram, sharing an image of the couple together as Hannah flashed her diamond engagement ring.

She wrote: “The phone call I’ve been waiting for and the best news in the entire world. My friends are engaged. I officially have a sister.” A romantic proposal saw Josh scatter rose petals across the floor along with pictures from their holidays and memories together in frames, as well as candles either side of the flowers, and letter lights spelling out “Marry Me.” Amy shared her delight at gaining a sister, penning: “Welcome to the family Han, couldn’t wish for anyone better.” He said: “The option to go back is always there but I want to move away from that and the focus is now very much on my job. Of course, I miss it and the sitting on the couch watching TV. But I am more focused on my future … it’s a more secure path.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
