The Channel 4 favourite returned with another episode on Friday, 14 March evening, with fans settling in to watch their favourite telly families critique the week’s television offerings. But it was the behaviour of one family – married couple Michael and Sally and sons Jake and Harry – that caught the audience’s attention. As they watched BBC’s nature documentary The Americas, narrated by Hollywood star Tom Hanks, Sally commented on the Blue-footed booby birds and their lifelong mating habits.

Sally looked to her husband Michael with admiration as she spoke about the birds, but her son’s response was far from kind, as he bluntly told her to “shut the f*** up”, reports the Mirror. Appalled viewers soon vented their frustration over his language on social media. One viewer wrote: “Telling his parents to shut the f*** up? And they just sat there and took like it was nothing? ? ? I’m sorry, but @ch4, do not show this family ever again. Utterly utterly disgraceful.” Another shared their disbelief: “If one of my bros said mother stfu I’d go nuts! ! In fact mine wouldn’t simple! And they are 28 30.” And a third added, clearly shocked: “I can never imagine saying ‘oh shut the f*** up’ to my parents, even in a jokey way.” While a fourth person said: “I will never get used to kids who swear at their parents.”

Amid the backlash, some viewers stood up for the controversial moment, as one person pointed out: “Why is everyone surprised at the guy telling his mum to stfu? She laughed, so it must be normal, and parents allow it.” The family from Kent joined the show last year. On Friday night’s show, Izzi excitedly revealed that her boyfriend’s name is Toby. She gushed to her sister: “Wait till you see what Toby got me for Valentine’s – a card in a box!’ Ellie then read the card out loud. It said: “To Izzi, our first of many. Thank you for being the absolute best. I bloody adore you. Happy Valentines Day. I love you loads and lots more. Toby.” A clearly smitten Izzi hugged the card close to her chest, asking Ellie: “How sick are you feeling now?” Ellie, who has been with her boyfriend Nat for five years and shares son Ezra with him, joked: “I need to take a picture so I can send it to Nat so he can cringe. I mean I would love for Nat to write that for me but he’d [shudder].” Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4
