Privacy NoticeOn the latest instalment of Gogglebox, Mary Killen found herself in the hot seat as her hubby Giles Wood quizzed her about her vanishing Irish twang. As they cosied up for their usual telly critique, Giles popped the question, “What’s happened to your Irish accent, Mary, a lot of people are asking that?”. A puzzled Mary shot back, “Why? Because it’s come back?”, only for Giles to reveal, “No, it’s gone! When you first came to London, did people tease you about your accent?”. Mary confessed that they did before sharing a bit of her past and added, “I could make no conversation or progress!”. Giles expressed his dismay at her revelation, responding, “That’s really annoying! Would that be a hate crime now?” to which Mary pointed out, “It would be!”.

The conversation comes amid Mary’s reflections on the “dismal ending” of her childhood abode, hinting at its downfall at the hands of “vandals” before it met its fate under a bulldozer. The beloved columnist, who has been gracing our screens alongside Giles since 2015 on the Channel 4 hit show, delved into her personal history in the couple’s book Country Life that was released last year. One tale from the book, where the pair divulge “share their hard-earned lessons” on rural living, has recently caught the public eye, particularly the chapter on Mary’s early days in Northern Ireland. It’s reported she spent her youth in Larne before venturing solo to London at the tender age of 18, reports the Mirror.

Tragically, the once cherished abode fell prey to ruthless “vandals” and ultimately faced demolition. In her memoir, Mary recounted the heartache: “Vandals broke in and tried to set fire to it on more than one occasion. They broke a stained-glass window on the landing just out of malice, not because they needed to come through that window.” She also shared: “The church said they had no option but to bulldoze the lovely property.”

Mary pours out her feelings in her book, stating: “It was a dismal ending for a house that had been of such service to both medical and social life – the centre of so many parties given by my parents.” After undertaking a poignant departure from Northern Ireland at 18, Mary embraced the London buzz for some time before seeking solace in the rural charms. These days, she’s cosied up in a delightful cottage in Wiltshire, sharing her serene escape with Giles.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
