Good Morning Britain took a trip down memory lane when they caught up with the legendary Blue Peter host Katy Hill on Tuesday morning. Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley chatted to Katy, 53, after the BBC announced that Blue Peter would no longer air live episodes following an impressive 66-year stint. The iconic show first hit our screens in 1958, but will now switch to pre-recorded segments to keep up with evolving ‘viewing habits’. The GMB presenters eagerly jumped into a conversation with the former children’s TV legend, who looked back fondly at her tenure on the programme from 1995 to 2000.

Opening up about her early dreams of stardom, Katy revealed: “You know what, I wanted to present that show since I was five! It was because this was the 70s, right, you guys know this? There had been no girl power!” She went on to explain how Blue Peter was a beacon of inspiration for her: “That was the place I saw girls jumping out of planes, flying fast jets and fast cars! Generally being pretty cool! I was like: ‘That’s the job for me!'”, reports the Mirror. Despite her initial stage fright, Katy emphasised that becoming a Blue Peter presenter was her ultimate goal, and she still vividly remembers her first live show – an electrifying cocktail of fear and excitement: “But as Peter said, there’s nothing like the adrenaline when you’re about to go live on your first show! It’s out of body, terrified!”. When quizzed if things ever went wrong on the show, Katy humorously responded: “All the time!”, acknowledging that imperfection was all part of the Blue Peter charm!

“As a presenter, it was like the university of presenting because you just had to keep going, which is a bit of an analogy for life – no matter what it throws at you, you just keep going and the resilience that you build, it’s incredible!”. “Having that impact on generations is phenomenal”, she added, revealing that she still gets people doing ‘double takes’ at her while out in public or women rushing over to tell her how she inspired them in life. GMB viewers watching the interview couldn’t help but comment on Katy’s youthful looks, expressing disbelief that she was 53 and suggesting she take up more TV presenting roles. Fans flocked to Twitter, now X, to sing her praises one person said: “Katy Hill looks great for 53yrs old #GMB”, a different account wrote: “LOVE KATY HILL! ! She looks great! She should be back presenting on tv ! !”, another put: “I can’t believe she’s 53” while a different show watcher added: “Katy Hill should be doing #ThisMorning #GMB She’s a natural.” Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV X.
