Privacy Notice Gavin and Stacey fans, brace yourselves for a fairytale ending as the final scenes appear to be set to feature a wedding. The much-loved BBC show is making a comeback with a last-ever episode airing on Christmas Day this year, with filming taking place in Wales and Essex over recent weeks. Show creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, who play Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith and Vanessa Shanessa ‘Nessa’ Jenkins respectively, have reunited with main stars Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, who play Gavin Shipman and Stacey West, along with the rest of the cast. As filming for the festive special wraps up, sneak peek photos from the set suggest that two fan-favourite characters will be tying the knot in heartfelt scenes. Former talk show host James, 46, and Welsh actress Ruth, 56, have been spotted in formal attire.

Set insiders have spilled some juicy details which seem to reveal major plot twists for the grand finale special. Fans who want to keep the suspense until the show airs might want to look away now to avoid spoilers. It seems like Smithy and Nessa will finally say “I do” in wedding scenes for the show’s last ever episode. A source spilled to The Mirror: “Nessa and Smithy are married! The pair are seen filming the final scenes to the Christmas special wearing matching wedding bands. The filming scenes are a wedding celebration party back in Barry, after they get married in Essex in the show. Nessa was seen in a flowing black dress, very much in the style of the character with Smithy in an England M&S Blazer.” The source added that there were scenes of happiness and joy on the set. They spilled: “The group were heard doing the conga as they wrapped on filming. In a cute twist, the very first Gavin and Stacey scenes were shot in the Tadcross Arms, the same venue for the very last scene.”

She was accompanied by Joanna while shooting, and the pair kept cosy in chic winter coats during breaks. Also gracing the set were show favourites Larry Lamb – who portrays Gavin’s dad – and Matthew, sharing the spotlight with Ruth. Matt turned heads in a vibrant cucumber green shirt, matching trousers, and a stylish cardigan. Larry brought even more flair to the scene with his lively purple shirt and salmon pink trousers. Meanwhile, James cut a dapper figure in his suit and dark attire. Previously in May, the BBC announced the return of Gavin and Stacey for one final episode, ending weeks of whispers that James and Ruth had crafted a new chapter. Amidst talk of a fierce battle between the BBC and Netflix for the rights to air the grand finale, the BBC announce a final episode of the beloved series. The BBC teased fans at the start of summer with a tweet: “We’ll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadums and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey! ! ! Coming this Christmas Day on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer.” The post was accompanied by a snap of James Corden and Ruth Jones peeking from behind the script for the final episode, aptly named: “Gavin and Stacey: The Finale”.

Devotees of the beloved series have been wildly guessing what twists the finale will bring. One eager fan speculated to the BBC: “We’ll find out about the fishing trip, there’ll be a big wedding and they’ll all end up having a curry. They can’t leave it on another cliffhanger, otherwise they’d have to do another one, wouldn’t they? “. One hopeful viewer shared their expectations for the upcoming special, saying: “They left it on a bit of a cliffhanger so it will be good to find out what happens. A lot of people, including myself, are anxious to find out what happens. What do I think happens? I reckon they get together, Nessa and Smithy. A happy ending.” Starting as a humble BBC Three comedy back in 2007, Gavin and Stacey quickly captured hearts and laughs alike, skyrocketing to success with regular audiences of over 7 million after making a move to BBC One. It was the Christmas special of 2019 – the most recent installment of the much-loved series – that wowed over 18 million viewers, becoming one of the major TV triumphs of the year. The holiday episode took a close look at the quirky yet affectionate dynamic between Nessa and Smithy as they navigated parenting their son Neil despite the physical distance, with Smithy in Essex.
