Coronation Street fans have taken to social media in a flurry of concern following the shocking turn of events that could spell the end for Jack P Shepherd’s character, David Platt. In tonight’s episode (Wednesday 5 March), viewers were left gasping as David and Daisy Midgeley were struck by a speeding car, leaving them both seriously injured. It’s known among fans that David had orchestrated this crash with Andy, intending to meet his end as a means to shake off villain Harvey Gaskell and safeguard his children. After drowning his sorrows at the pub, David exited the Rovers, fully aware of his impending doom. However, the plot thickened when Daisy, fresh from storming out of the pub, unwittingly walked into the path of the oncoming car. In a desperate move, David shoved her aside, resulting in both of them being hit.

Subsequent scenes showed David battling for survival in hospital. Coronation Street enthusiasts wasted no time sharing their thoughts on the episode after it aired. “This is quite a dark opening,” one viewer commented as David was depicted ticking down the hours to his planned demise, while sending an oddly upbeat message to his mates to join him at the pub. “‘Yo biatches’ has ended me. Only David could make being taken out by a hitman funny,” another fan quipped, reports the Mirror. “It’s like High Noon… except it’s more Tommy Cooper than Gary Cooper,” another observed, referencing the strangely comedic build-up to the ‘accident’. The episode split Corrie fans, with some left unimpressed. An annoyed fan threatened to cut ties with the show, saying: “If they kill David off I’m never watching again,” while nostalgia triggered criticism from another, reminiscing: “I remember when the main plot was Len fitting dodgy radiators to Rita’s flat.” A more dramatic viewer declared: “RIP Coronation Street 1960-2025.” On the flip side, plenty hailed the crash sequence as top-notch television. Commendations came in with a fan exclaiming: “Well that was a bit of drama!” and approval of the stunt work as someone else noted: “The stunt looked pretty good tbf.”

But it was the cliffhanger that really got people talking – the uncertainty of Daisy’s baby’s fate and whether David would pull through sent viewers into a frenzy. “So no one gets to be a father, just grim,” lamented one fan. Another couldn’t wait for the end, writing: “Thank god that’s over.” Yet there was positivity in the mix too, with a cheerful fan claiming: “Well that was the best episode for a long time. Jack Shepherd deserves an award.” Jack P Shepherd himself might’ve let slip a hint about his character’s future during a chat on This Morning before the incident-laden episode aired. He shared on Wednesday: “I think he thinks it’s the only way. He’s got into a pickle owing money and Max is now in prison. He feels this is the only way to clear all the debt and his family will be better off without him.” During a chat about the gripping plot twist, Jack hinted at the “end” of his time on the Street, sparking rumours that he’s taking his final bow from the ITV drama. In conversation with presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley, alongside soap guru Sharon Marshall, David reflected: “25 years, it’s a long time. I think it’s about 25 years next month. It would have been nice to meet that milestone. But sadly tonight’s the end. I’ve loved every minute. I can’t believe we’ve managed to keep it out for so long. I think everybody will enjoy it.”
