An expert has warned anyone planning to jet off on holiday to avoid a viral packing hack that could prevent you from boarding the plane. While we’re always looking for new ways to minimise our packing, a hack that went viral on TikTok could cause more damage than it’s worth. The space-saving packing hack involves people decanting their medication bottles from their original bottles into smaller containers, in a bid to save space. Users have also suggested putting medication pills into an empty Tic Tac box. While it may sound like a good idea, especially if you’re only taking hand luggage, experts at Landys Chemist have warned it could stop you from travelling altogether and there are several reasons why. Director at Landys Chemist, Mitesh Desai, explains: “Removing medication from its original packaging can cause delays at the airport.

“The lack of identification could raise concerns, with security requiring additional information, delaying or potentially preventing you from boarding your flight. In worst-case scenarios, you may have to discard your medicine.” She continued: “In addition to the hassle of making it through the airport, you could also run the risk of diminishing the effectiveness of your medication by putting it into a different container. Medical packaging is designed to protect medication from interacting with elements such as light, heat, moisture and air, which can degrade the potency of medicine over time. When you remove your medication’s original packaging, exposure to external elements can reduce the stability of the medication’s formulation and contribute to a potential loss of therapeutic benefits.”

Different countries have different rules on what medication you can or can’t carry onboard

When it comes to the rules of travelling with medication, different countries have different rules on what you can or can’t carry, so it’s vital to check before heading to the airport. Mitesh shared: “Many countries will require you to keep your medication in its original packaging when travelling overseas, ensuring that the label is clear and legible. “Medications that are freely available in one country may be classed as controlled substances in other countries.” While it’s best to avoid Tic Tac boxes and decanting medication, there are plenty of other ways to save space when it comes to packing our suitcases.
