Privacy Notice It has been 12 years since the role of Angelica King was recast on Emmerdale after Sophie Firth, who originated the role in 2009, tragically died in a freak accident at the age of three. The role is currently played by Rebecca Bakes, who recently announced that she would be returning to the role after several months away. On the ITV soap, Angelica had been sentenced to eight months detention at a secure children’s home after her dangerous driving caused the death of her friend Heath Hope. While Rebecca will be returning to the role later this year as Angelica finishes her sentence, she is the second actress to take on the role of Angelica – with the first being Sophie.

‘I went to visit the Emmerdale set and how they perform their biggest stunts shocked me’

Emmerdale star Sophie was just three years old when she tragically died. According to the Mail Online in December 2012, Sophie was at her grandmother’s house in South Yorkshire when her dress caught alight from a gas fire. While Sophie’s mother Amy tried to smother the flames with a blanket, 70 percent of Sophie’s body was covered in burns. After nine days at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Sophie sadly died from a blood infection. She passed away whilst surrounded by her family – including her parents Neil and Amy. They released a statement at the time, announcing the loss of their “bright and beautiful” little girl. They added that they will “carry their little princess in their arms forever”. The Mail Online reported that the family had been staying at Sophie’s grandmother’s home in Skellow, Doncaster while their home was being worked on in Austerfield. A spokesperson for Emmerdale said at the time in a statement: “We are devastated to hear of Sophie’s tragic death. Our sincere condolences go out to her family. Everyone at Emmerdale is thinking of them at this sad time.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “This was a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends at this extremely distressing time. “Any fire can be dangerous. We would urge people to pay particular attention to the risk of fires in their home during the cold weather and as we approach the holiday season.” Since Sophie’s death, her parents have fundraised for meaningful causes in her honour, including The Children’s Hospital Charity – with their JustGiving page raising nearly £23,000. They wrote on the page: “Anyone who ever met Sophie knows not only was she was she beautiful but she was exceptionally bright, loving and funny. Her family and friends miss her more than words can say; our anguish at the loss of such a young and promising life is too much to bear. “Her mum Amy and Dad Neil cannot imagine life without Sophie. Sophie was three and a half (and the half mattered), just by being Sophie she said and did so many things that brought joy to our lives, she was at the centre of everything she did and the heart of the family.” Sophie played the role of baby Angelica for three months in 2009, with the character now played by Rebecca Bakes. Speaking about returning to the soap, Rebecca said earlier this month: “It could go in the direction of [Angelica] being a rebel or going a bit downhill but I don’t really know yet!” Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
