Privacy NoticeActor Oliver Farnworth is about to step into the Dales for the first time as Victoria Sugden’s half-brother, John, but he’s not a stranger to the soap world. Oliver played Andy Carver in Coronation Street from 2014 to 2017 but despite his character’s grisly end at the hands of Pat Phelan, he insists fans don’t recognise him for that role anymore. “I’m not really recognised on the street,” reveals Oliver. “But Andy was great to play. He was a fairly troubled character towards the end. I got to die twice, which was nice. Killed by Pat Phelan, which is a badge of honour.” Andy came to the cobbles claiming to be Michael Rodwell’s son Gavin – which he wasn’t. Andy was later abducted and murdered by serial killer Pat Phelan (played by Connor McIntyre).

Joining Emmerdale will be Oliver’s third soap appearance as one of his very first screen jobs was on Hollyoaks where he starred as Will Hackett in 2006. “Hollyoaks was my first job out of drama school,” confirms Oliver. “I think I lasted nine months on that, which was good, because I was an absolute psycho in that which was fun to play. Will was an extremely troubled character. “That was a particularly steep learning curve because I came out of quite a theatrical training, and then went straight into single camera work. But as a first job, it was brilliant and a lot of fun.”

Now, Oliver is about to enter the Emmerdale village as John Sugden, who meets Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) at his mum’s funeral. They have a rocky start and don’t see eye-to-eye, but John is forced to stay in the village when his van breaks down and Victoria seizes her chance to get to know her long lost sibling. “Victoria adores him,” reveals Isabel. “She thinks, ‘I’ve got a week to bring him round and make him love the idea of being in my family, and to try and make him stay.’ And John is strongly against that. He’s not cruel, but he’s just very clear with – ‘this is where I find myself. I’m not staying. I don’t want any part of this. As nice as you are, thank you, but no, thank you.’ But she’s like, ‘please love me!’”.

Oliver describes his character as a “lone wolf”. “There’s a lot to him, and a lot in the initial character breakdown that was hinted at but wasn’t necessarily revealed, because obviously, they don’t like to give too much away too quickly,” teases Oliver. “And I’m still finding stuff out about him, but really, we find out quite quickly that he’s got a military past, he’s openly gay. “He doesn’t really go near emotions. Like I said, he doesn’t like to rely on people. I think he’s been hurt in the past, and he’s adamant that won’t happen again.” Isabel reveals she was thrilled to have another Sugden join the show. “They are such an important family,” she says. “We’re dwindling numbers wise. So it’s nice to get another member of the team on board and fly the Sugden flag.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
