Privacy NoticeEducating Yorkshire student, Musharaf Asghar, known as Mushy, was seen on the Channel 4 series working to overcome his stammer in 2013 – and he’s just reached a huge milestone. Since the series aired, the star has graduated from university and has recently shared a heartwarming statement. He wrote: “Today I turned 28 YEARS OLD. Which means 12 YEARS AGO I was on Educating Yorkshire. Over the years, teachers have helped me to push forward in all things I doubted myself I could achieve. Teachers gave me more than an education – they gave me a future. I will forever be grateful.” Fans took to the comments responding, and couldn’t believe 12 years have passed since he appeared on television. One wrote: “I saw some clips on TikTok yesterday and I was crying all over again. Happy birthday and I’m delighted to hear you’re doing well and achieving things.”

Another added: “Congratulations dude! your story is definitely one to be shared!”. A third said: “Happy Birthday Mush. I hope that life is good for you. I’ll always remember watching your speech to your peers and teachers…so inspirational and very moving. X”. A fourth responded: “I still regularly mention this moment in family conversations! One of the most heart filling moments ever on television. Really happy you’re doing so well!”.

It meant he struggled as a pupil at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury until one of his teachers, Matthew Burton, was inspired to help him after watching The King’s Speech. Matthew suggested Musharaf read while listening to music through headphones – a technique used by King George VI’s speech therapist Lionel Logue. It worked and viewers saw him get through his English GCSE oral exam and deliver an end-of-term speech in a school assembly.

After the programme was broadcast, Musharaf went on to deliver speeches in schools across the UK to help inspire other children to “overcome their challenges”. In 2022, he graduated from Huddersfield University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Reflecting on his experience, Musharaf said: “From sitting in the classroom and contemplating if life would ever accept me for having a stammer, to going to university and graduating. “I can’t sum up in words how proud I am and how much my teachers changed my life.
