Privacy NoticeEastEnders’ 40th anniversary is fast approaching, and with one shock return recently revealed, Emma Barton and Jamie Borthwick announced we can expect more “very exciting things” to come. On Tuesday night, July 16, it was announced that David Wicks (Michael French) would be making his return 34 years after his first appearance on the show. The villain turned up at dad Pete Beale’s (Peter Dean) funeral and went on to be one of the most ‘beloved rouges’ on the soap. It comes just two weeks after it was announced that Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) would be making a surprise return after almost two decades away from the Square.

Chrissie was last seen in the BBC show in December 2005, when she was sent to jail for murdering her husband “Dirty Den” Watt. Emma Barton, who plays Honey Mitchell and Jamie Borthwick, who plays Jay Brown attended the first RadioTimes.com soap awards on Saturday as they spoke to OK! And other media about the exciting events leading up to the anniversary. “We just know that Chris is going to have something very exciting planned as he always does. It is very exciting, we’re all just really proud that we’re there and going to be a part of it.” Although fans can expect more surprises to come, everything is remaining ‘lock and key’ for now. “I think it’s so lock and key we don’t even know if those in the know know,” Jamie laughed. It seems he wasn’t wrong, as David Wicks’ return came as a surprise just days after the event.

It was a great night for EastEnders who picked up a whopping 7 awards at the Manchester Midland Hotel, including Best Soap and Soap Moment of the Year, for Sixmas. Speaking on his return Michael said: “I feel honoured to be asked to reprise the role of David Wicks once again. It may only be a brief visit, but we know from his past that David never fails to create a lot of drama in a very short time.” He first ended up leaving in 1996, but made his shock return in 2012, where he reunited with estranged partner Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson), but suffered a heart attack at their wedding. In 2014, he made his exit, leaving Albert Square for America, and executives are thrilled to welcome the character back to the show. “David Wicks is undoubtedly one of EastEnders’ most beloved rogues, and we are thrilled to welcome the talented Michael French back to the legendary role as we lead up to the show’s 40th anniversary,” Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said. “David’s character was never shy of drama during his previous stints, and I can assure you this return will be no different.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
