Privacy Notice Former EastEnders actor, Harry Rafferty, 34, escaped a prison sentence after assaulting a woman with a ‘bladed article’ and punching her in the face. The actor, known for his role as violent gang leader Kane in the BBC soap during 2013 reportedly flew into a “rage” and threatened to kill the woman following an altercation at a friend’s house in Camden, north London. The incident occurred on May 15, 2021, after Harry and a friend met the victim and her companion at a bar, leading to them all returning to Harry’s friend’s house. Prosecutor Frida Hussain KC told Wood Green Crown Court that the woman described Harry “making sexual advances that she rejected, and she had to justify why she didn’t want anything to do with him”. This rejection led to Harry’s “undue rage”, during which he threatened to kill the woman, reports the Evening Standard. “He went on to punch her several times in the face and chest, while attacking her with a bladed article. She received cuts to her face and slash marks to her upper chest and abdomen,” added the prosecutor.

The court heard how the woman managed to defend herself and find safety in the bathroom. Police were called to the scene and found Harry’s fingerprints on the handle of a broken knife used in the attack. A “deeply remorseful” Harry wept in court and was sentenced earlier this month, with Judge David Aaronberg KC criticising him for denying the assault charge, reports the Mirror. He also faced criticism for subjecting the woman to the stress of a full cross-examination trial despite the “overwhelming” evidence. However, his two-year jail sentence was suspended due to court delays and a lack of available space in prison.

The judge expressed: “I don’t want to lock you up but you have got to get your life sorted out. You have a drinking problem, and you are drinking in the last chance saloon.” The court heard that the former EastEnders actor had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and may have been experiencing psychosis at the time. These factors were considered by the judge in their sentencing decision. Harry had admitted to making threats to kill and was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the trial. His sentence includes 140 hours of community service, a mandatory 20 days in rehabilitation, and he must attend a 12-month alcohol treatment programme. A restraining order has been put in place indefinitely to prevent him from contacting the victim. In her impact statement, the woman disclosed she lost friends, had suicidal thoughts, and became fearful of leaving her home since the incident.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
