Privacy NoticeEastEnders’ Reiss Colwell finds himself in a web of deceit next week after he shockingly murdered his wife, Debbie, to clear her mounting care home debts. Debbie had been in a coma for some time following a stroke, and Reiss (played by Jonny Freeman) turned to murder to resolve his financial issues during Wednesday’s episode of the BBC soap (July 24). Initially, he was using Debbie’s money to fund his and Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) IVF treatment, which has been a success. The accountant also swindled £13.5k from Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), and her business partner Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is hot on his trail to reclaim the stolen funds, which Reiss had planned to invest – or that’s what he told the pair. Next week, Phil confronts Reiss in the Square demanding a return on his ‘investment’, while a pregnant Sonia watches from a distance. Curious about the tension between Phil and Reiss, Sonia questions her boyfriend about the local tough guy’s issue, reports the Express. At first, Reiss attempts to hide his latest deception, but eventually cracks under pressure and confesses to stealing Phil’s money. Sonia is taken aback by Reiss’ most recent dishonesty, but she puts her feelings aside as they visit Debbie.

Just before they head to the care home, the police inform Reiss that Debbie’s post-mortem is complete and he can see her while they await the results. However, Sonia soon finds herself caught up in another lie due to Reiss’ deceitful actions. While visiting the care home, Reiss and Sonia unexpectedly run into Debbie’s parents Brenda and Hugh Collins, portrayed by Michael Bertenshaw and Nichola McAuliffe. This leaves widower Reiss with some serious explaining to do.

Reiss faces a tricky situation as Debbie’s parents are completely unaware of Sonia’s existence, let alone that she is his new girlfriend and they are expecting a baby together. Things get tense when Brenda starts asking pointed questions. Sonia extends her sympathies to Debbie’s parents, who don’t recognise her. Sonia is taken aback when Reiss introduces her as his landlady, concealing the truth about their relationship, but she goes along with it. They then head to No. 25 for some refreshments.

After Reiss explains why he hasn’t disclosed their relationship to Brenda and Hugh, they are caught in a passionate kiss by Brenda, forcing Reiss to confess the truth. Later on, Brenda and Hugh overhear Sharon and Teddy discussing Reiss and are taken aback by what they discover. The question remains, will Sonia ever tire of Reiss’ deceitful antics?
