As the cast wrapped up filming the heart-wrenching live episode on Thursday night, 20 February, when Martin Fowler tragically died, they marked the milestone backstage with an afterparty. Bianca Jackson star Patsy Palmer was on the decks DJing while the cast got to say goodbye to Martin star James Bye. Adam, who plays Ian Beale on the soap was seen travelling home with co-star Jessie Wallace, better known as Kat Slater. However, their departure from Elstree Studios was hindered by eager fans who had been waiting all night to catch a glimpse of their beloved soap stars. Onlookers claim that 56 year old Adam was quick to get out of the car he shared with Jessie, urging the crowd to clear the road for safety reasons and to allow the cast to leave the studios without incident. One onlooker claimed Adam “shouted at fans” instructing them to: “Move out of the way! “.

Despite already having moved to the pavement, one fan decided to chance their luck and asked Adam for an autograph – a request he is said to have declined. “I’m not signing autographs, just get out of the way,” he retorted, reports the Mirror. Jessie was heard calling for Adam to get back in the car, but she seemed in high spirits, waving and beaming at the crowd. Actress Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia, was also spotted in high spirits hours after her intense live episode performance, where she feigned giving birth to daughter Julia amidst the chaos of the Queen Vic pub explosion. And despite her character’s heartache over on-screen beau Martin Fowler’s (James Bye) demise, Louisa Lytton, who plays Ruby Allen, was also seen looking cheerful. Before the live episode aired, Adam shared a throwback to a memorable gaffe from the 2010 live episode. Amongst various slip-ups, one stands out: Jo Joyner, then playing Tanya Branning, famously flubbed her lines by calling Ian Beale by the actor’s real name, asking Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), “How’s Adam?”

Reflecting on this iconic blunder in a recent special, Adam sympathised with Jo, saying: “We all felt for Jo. You’ve gotta think how she felt – that when ever anybody mentions the live now that’s what gets mentioned. She can’t escape from it.” He added: “I remember she came into … Cause we were all in different studios…” and recounted how a visibly distressed Jo entered and upon being asked what was wrong, she ominously replied, “And Jo’s come in and she’s… Shaken up. Really, really shaken up. And we’re all sort of looking at her and going ‘what’s the matter? what’s the matter? ‘ And she just went ‘You’ll find out’.”

Adam, one of the original stars since EastEnders first hit screens in 1985, emphasised that live episodes come with their fair share of risks and pressure. He pointed out, “Any one of us could get it wrong and it’s the pressure of it. The crew could get something wrong. We could get something wrong.” Jo has opened up about her own on-screen mishap before, previously telling Radio Times: “I’ve got a good sense of humour. But I couldn’t laugh about it until I’d gone out there the next night [for more live scenes]. I knew that people were watching to see if I messed up again.”
