More infoJoin us on WhatsApp The highly awaited 40th anniversary week of EastEnders is now in full swing, with Wednesday 19 February’s special hour-long episode revealing the aftermath of the Queen Vic fire and a live episode set for Thursday 20 February. Wednesday’s episode saw some residents battling for their lives as it was unveiled that not everyone will survive the pub fire following Tuesday’s shocking events. It was disclosed that Kathy was the one who attacked Cindy. A dispute with Ian resulted in Cindy ‘accidentally’ shooting him in the arm, and another argument had Cindy pushing Ian into the road and into the path of Reiss’s car.

He swerved to avoid Ian, but instead crashed into gas cans that exploded in the beloved Queen Vic. With many familiar faces from EastEnders inside celebrating Honey and Billy’s wedding at the time, fans are eager to know who survives and who will make their final exit from Albert Square in a hearse. In the hour long episode, Reiss was trapped in the rubble, Sharon was saved by Grant, and a cliffhanger ending showed Martin ‘choosing’ Stacey over Ruby, only for a giant metal girder to fall from the ceiling, jeopardising their happiness. He bravely pushed Stacey out of the way of the falling beam, only to be crushed by it himself.

Social media was abuzz with EastEnders fans shocked at the latest cliffhanger, speculating frenziedly about whether Martin Fowler would make it through. “Is Martin going to die. And is Stacey going to tell ruby he chose her?” one viewer pondered on Twitter, reports the Mirror. Another quipped, foreseeing the drama, “Martin chooses Stacey then gets crushed by a steel beam,” complete with laughing emojis for effect. A concerned fan speculated, “Martin better live or I will have words. I think Martin is a red herring. I think he’ll live and someone dies in hospital,” as another hoped against hope, “Please let Reiss be the only one deceased, we cannot lose Martin!” Capturing the sentiment of many, a tweet read: “You can’t tease the Martin and Stacey reunion and then put Martin’s life at risk!” Anticipating the twist, an eagle-eyed fan had already posted their theory more than a day in advance, saying, “Martin will have to pick between saving Stacey or Ruby. He picks Stacey and then Ruby dies. That’s my theory.”

With nerves fraying, viewers still have the upcoming live episode to contend with, where Denise’s big decision over Jack and Ravi will be dictated by the public vote. Although some like Ross Kemp are sitting out of the live episode, Jamie Borthwick, known as Jay Mitchell on the square, is all geared up and excited following his stint on Strictly Come Dancing. He confidently declared: “You know what? That live episode will be a walk in the park now I’ve done Strictly, I won’t even be thinking about nerves. That won’t even be a thing. Like, “Oh, are we live?” he says. “Nothing will be scarier than dancing, doing something I don’t really know how to do, in front of millions, let alone doing something I do know how to do. I won’t even bat an eyelid. I never thought I’d be in that position, so I have to thank Strictly for that.”
