The 40th anniversary celebrations of EastEnders have begun, and viewers are inching closer to uncovering who left Cindy Beale in peril. But the audience is convinced they’ve cracked the case already, anticipating a jaw-dropping comeback to Albert Square. The suspense was cranked up a notch in Monday’s episode, which concluded with Cindy aiming Phil’s firearm at an unknown figure clutching her locket inside the Beale home. Cindy’s treasured locket, holding a picture of her deceased daughter Lucy Beale, appeared to be snatched after she was attacked and left for dead. She’s been on a mission to retrieve it, suspecting that its possessor is her assailant.

Throughout the episode, Cindy pointed fingers at Ian, accusing him of delivering the near-lethal hit on Christmas Day, while he maintained his innocence. “You!” she exclaimed, gun in hand, as the scene cut to black. Fans flocked to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to speculate. A number of them are betting on Peter, but some believe another Beale might be the culprit, reports the Mirror. “Just realised it’s probably Bobby back tonight #EastEnders, went after his half sister 10 years ago and now her mother this year,” speculated one viewer, while another suggested: “It looks like this ‘Shock return’ teased in today’s writeup could be someone else. Given Reiss was in today’s preview and in spoilers I don’t think it’s him. I have a feeling that Cindy came face to face with Jane Bobby or Cindy Jnr last night. #EastEnders #EE40.”

Speculation is rife among EastEnders fans as they try to piece together the latest Walford whodunnit. A third fan tweeted: “I just know it’s either Bobby or Kojo who Cindy caught. Maybe Jane too ? #EastEnders,” while another was certain, saying: “For the last time I still think it’s Bobby! #EastEnders.” Bobby, played by Clay Milner Russell, made his dramatic exit from the show at the end of last year after the actor revealed his departure in April. Bobby was crushed to find out that his girlfriend Anna had been unfaithful with his best mate Freddie, and was even more shattered upon learning she had terminated her pregnancy and declared her love for Freddie, portrayed by Bobby Brazier. Deciding he’d had enough, Bobby packed up and left Albert Square. His final scenes showed him visiting Lucy Beale’s grave one last time before being whisked away by his mother Jane to start anew in the Cotswolds. With the bombshell revelation back in 2015 that Bobby was responsible for Lucy’s death in a moment of anger, viewers are left wondering if he could have come back to unleash his fury on Cindy.
