Privacy NoticeGreg Rutherford has been struck down by food poisoning during his time in Paris, the Olympic hero shared in a candid social media update. After wrapping up a session for the Inside Track podcast with Sanya Richi Ross, the 37 year old took to social media from his sickbed, confessing he’s feeling “horrendously” under the weather. In a video from his bed, Greg explained: “Hello everyone. Thought I’d give you a little update. I’ve just recorded the first pod with Sonya, really good fun. But I got food poisoning last night. I have been in a horrendously bad way and I haven’t felt this unwell in a long time.”

Day one in Paris has been me laying on my bed, getting up recording the first show, and I’m now back in bed before we record another show in two hours time. God food poisioning is horrendous.” The retired long jump star has had a tough year, having to bow out of Dancing on Ice ahead of the final due to a nasty injury. Reflecting on that difficult period, Greg shared how he had “effectively [given himself] a C-section” when he ripped his abdominal muscles performing a daring move through the legs of ice pros Brendyn Hatfield and Colin Grafton. His recent misfortune is followed by a ‘terrifying’ ordeal that occurred at his home last month when a skylight unexpectedly shattered. The athlete took to social media to share the harrowing experience, revealing how he was left trembling after the incident, which happened just moments after his children had been sitting right beneath the now-broken window.

He recounted the chilling moment, saying: “One of the most terrifying experiences – one of our skylights up here just exploded. Just, literally, me standing in the kitchen watching the TV on the wall, and it just went – bang! And glass went everywhere.” Greg also expressed his immense relief that his son Milo wasn’t injured, as he had just moved him outside before the explosion. Reflecting on the close call he said: “I kid you not, two minutes before, Milo was down here doing some school work, and I said, ‘It’s a nice day, go out on the deck, mate.’ Thank God I did that because if not, I can’t even imagine what could have happened.” Ryan Thomas, took home the crown in the 2024 series of Dancing on Ice, and Despite his own misfortune, Greg was full of praise for the former Coronation Street star, acknowledging his victory with grace and warmth. In his congratulatory message, he said: “Well done, brother, I’m glad I’ve got a friend for life in you,” and added: “He’s had his fair share of ups and downs during his process, so to come out winning is utterly spectacular.” Before retiring from athletics in 2018 due to an ankle injury, Greg bagged a gold medal in the long jump at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
