Privacy NoticeCraig Revel Horwood is known for being Strictly Come Dancing’s tough judge, with contestants aware that he is exceptionally hard to please. The professional dancer and choreographer never holds back with his critiques – but viewers have come to love him for his honesty. Craig, 59, oozes confidence on the Strictly panel, and on the dance floor, but he’s been open in the past about his battles with his body image and self-confidence. The star had his body hang-ups just like the rest of us, and has even spoke openly about being ridiculed as a teenager for his body. He was specifically conscious of his chest, having developed ‘man boobs’ – known medically as gynaecomastia – at a young age. The condition causes abnormal breast enlargement in men.

“The local kids used to call me ‘T**s’ because even as a child I had them,” Craig previously admitted. “When I took up dancing in my teens and simultaneously became anorexic, they didn’t go.” He added to the Daily Mail: “Men are supposed to have pecs, not boobs. I could never take my shirt off on the beach, and worried about getting undressed in front of a new partner.” Being a professional dancer meant he was incredibly conscious of his body, however it was joining Strictly Come Dancing that sparked Craig’s decision to undergo surgery on his chest. He previously revealed that he “put on weight” while working on the BBC show. This led to him booking a consultation at a Harley Street clinic in May 2011 to explore his options. Craig eventually underwent surgery on his chest, leaving him delighted.

The dancer has been a part of the Strictly judging panel ever since the show began in 2004. He currently sits on the panel with Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke. The BBC One show is set to return in September, with the celebrities such as Shane Ward, Tasha Ghouri, Pete Wicks, Jamie Borthwick and JB Gill taking part in the new series. It will mark the 20th anniversary of Strictly, with bosses no doubt planning some big shows for fans. The show has come under scrutiny over recent months following the axing of professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima. There is currently an investigation happening at the BBC concerning the dancers’ treatment of former celebrity partners – they both strongly deny any wrongdoing.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
