Privacy NoticeCountryfile legend John Craven confessed: “I’m getting on a bit” whilst commenting on his advancing years. The veteran broadcaster, who has graced our screens for half a century, featured in The One Show segment this Tuesday (October 1), sitting for his portrait by artist Adebanji Alade. When quizzed about his legendary status during the segment, the humble presenter replied: “I don’t really like being called a legend, because, yeah, I’m getting on a bit, but I still feel quite useful.” Artist Adebanji, however, insisted: “I would say you are a legend!” John also delivered a stark warning for nature enthusiasts, highlighting the dire state of UK wildlife: “[The UK] is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. One in six of all species are under threat of extinction, from the hazel dormouse to turtledoves. We have a crisis in the shortage of trees in this landscape. We have to do something to protect our glorious countryside,” reports Wales Online.

Discussing why he believes the nation holds him so dear, John mused: “I think it’s because I’m regarded as almost a friend. To this day people come up to me and say, ‘Thank you for being part of my childhood. Thanks for telling me what was happening in the world.'” Reflecting back on his health issues, the cherished presenter opened up last year, revealing that post-40, his vision had started to blur and his hearing was deteriorating. He confided to the Daily Mail, “At first, I worried what people would say about my wearing spectacles on TV but there wasn’t a single comment. Then, in my 60s, my hearing began to fail.

“I couldn’t make out conversations in crowded places, the sounds of nature became muffled and ‘say it again’ started to become a common response.” John has embraced using hearing aids, cherishing his new life in a world of “full-blown sound”. Despite finding immense benefit from the devices, they have posed challenges too, as he revealed an urgent trip to A&E was needed when he mistakenly purchased the wrong domes for his ear canals, resulting in one being removed by emergency medics.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
