Privacy NoticeCorrie icon Bill Roache, who’s played Ken Barlow since day one in 1960, has just signed on the dotted line to stay with us at Weatherfield for another year. In a nostalgic chat on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, the record-breaking TV star shared his excitement about his ongoing stint. “Still going strong, and hope to make the centenarian,” he joked. “That would be great.” When Alan asked him the recipe for his longevity on the show, William let slip: “The secret is to enjoy yourself.” He then served up some sage advice on how to remain sprightly as one gets on in years.

The soap star laughed off the notion of winding down after hitting the big six-o: “When you’re 60, you know, ‘Oh sit down, take it easy, aren’t you retiring yet? ‘ and all those things. “No! Keep going! I’m doing a parachute jump in a few weeks’ time. You just do whatever you want to do, as long as you enjoy it, that’s the main thing.” Alan chimed in with the timeless saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” leading William to nod in agreement: “Yes, absolutely.”

Turning 92 this April and having partied into his 10th decade last year, William’s made it abundantly clear, especially during his birthday bash special, that retirement isn’t even remotely on his to-do list. “People will say, ‘When are you retiring?’ But then what happens? Whilst I can do it, and whilst they will have me, I have no intention of retiring,” he said. “I am so fortunate to work for an organisation that is happy to have me. “For me, it’s really just the same as ever. Getting on with it, steady as you go. If you enjoy doing something, keep doing it.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
