Privacy NoticeA Coronation Street actress was reportedly written out of the soap after they underwent plastic surgery without consulting show bosses. Lynne Perrie made her first appearance as Ivy Brennan was in June 1971. Originally a minor role, Lynne was able to take on other work until Ivy became a regular character in 1978, including cabaret dates and guest appearances in TV drama series including Crown Court and Follyfoot. On February 5, 1994, she underwent a lip enhancement procedure without informing her bosses at the soap. Following her cosmetic surgery, Lynne resumed filming for Coronation Street, with her new enhanced lips suddenly appearing on screen. However, she soon left the show, with her final scenes as Ivy airing on March 25, 1994. While some sources suggest she was let go due to this, others claim that she felt her character Ivy had reached its end and had no further storyline.

Due to Lynne’s abrupt departure, her character Ivy didn’t receive a proper send-off. It was later explained that Ivy had moved to a Catholic retreat and decided to stay there. In March 1994, it was announced that her contract would not be renewed. However, Lynne maintained that it was her decision to exit Coronation Street. During and after her stint on Coronation Street, Lynne battled a well publicised drink problem, a gambling addiction, and depression following the heartbreaking news of her son’s positive HIV status. Reflecting on this dramatic period in 1998, she said: “Any mother will understand the pain but for me it was much worse. He was my only child and we went through this under the spotlight of publicity.”

Speaking about leaving the soap, she added: “I’ve been haunted by Ivy since I left. After she died they brought her back as a ghost. I didn’t want to go out because people kept stopping me and talking to me as Ivy. I became a prisoner in my own home. I was going to bed and swallowing sleeping tablets. I was going crazy. As time passed, she began mending her life, though her health continued to decline, allegedly reaching its worst in 2001. Yet, two years later she stated she had improved and hinted at making a return. However, in line with what friends recognised as her manic depressive character, the comeback never came into fruition. Lynne passed away on March 24, 2006 at the age of 74 after suffering a stroke. Tributes poured in from her former Coronation Street co-stars. Johnny Briggs, known for his role as factory boss Mike Baldwin, who often sparred with Ivy on-screen, shared: “She was my daughter’s godmother and one of the most generous people I ever met. She would give a tramp £10 rather than walk past in the street. Elizabeth Dawn, who portrayed Vera Duckworth, said: “I am terribly saddened to hear the news. She was always full of life and great fun to work with. ” Meanwhile, William Roache, the actor behind Ken Barlow, remarked: “You always knew when Lynne was in the room as the sound of her laughter was never far away.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
